Yesterday our sub centre had the privilege of hosting more than 40 cadets, aged between 13 and 17, from the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club.
The aim of the session was to give the cadets a deeper understanding of emergency response from a St Johns perspective, while strengthening interagency teamwork and communication.
We started the day with an informal chat about how a 000 call is handled from the start until the ambulance is despatched. We then talked about how our sub centre is run, followed by a tour of our training and storage facilities. Next they explored all of our road ambulances, our 4WD ambulance and mass casualty trailer, where they got to see our equipment, first aid supplies and medications.
Another fun activity was applying a combat torniquet to a severed limb.
An AED training simulator was setup so the kids could practice their CPR with live feedback.
The last session of the day was a competitive relay which involved the teams applying snake bite bandages, splints to broken limbs, slings to broken arms, administering Ventolin to a patient having an asthma attack and lots more. This was a lot of fun.
We finished the day with a sausage sizzle.
The St John volunteers and Community Paramedic really enjoyed hosting the CSLSC.
