Most homes have smoke alarms installed, but they’re easy to forget. Without regular checks, cleaning and replacement, they may not work when needed.

Why smoke alarms matter:
Smoke alarms warn you early if there’s a fire, often before you can see or smell smoke, especially at night.

Common issues:
A lot of smoke alarm problems come down to simple things:
• Smoke alarms older than 10 years
• Flat or missing batteries
• Smoke alarms that haven’t been tested recently
• Dust or insects affecting how the alarm works
• Smoke alarms removed or disconnected (often after false alarms)
• Smoke alarms painted over during renovations
• Not being sure how to check or maintain them.

Safety tips to reduce risk
A few quick checks can make a big difference:
• Press the test button to make sure your alarm is working
• Give it a quick clean to remove dust or insects
• Check the battery (including any backup battery)
• Make sure alarms are in the right places, especially near bedrooms
• Replace any alarm that isn’t working properly or is more than 10 years old.

Let’s take action this month
On 1 June, take a few minutes to Test, Clean, Check and Replace.

• Test your smoke alarm by pressing the button until your smoke alarm makes a sound
• Clean your smoke alarm using the soft brush on your vacuum cleaner
• Check the replacement date on your smoke alarm
• Replace smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old
• Check what type of battery your smoke alarm uses, including backup batteries in mains powered smoke alarms
• Replace 9-volt alkaline batteries every year.

You can find more information about smoke alarms at www.dfes.wa.gov.au/hazard-information/fire-in-the-home/smoke-alarms
