Today is NATIONAL THREATENED SPECIES DAY, observed across Australia every year on September 7th to raise awareness of our native plants and animals that are at risk of extinction.

Here in our own backyard, along the Murray River and surrounding wetlands, woodlands and floodplains, we are incredibly fortunate to share our environment with some very special and unique species that need our protection.

🐍 Murray-Darling Carpet Python
🐿️ Squirrel Glider
🦎 Lace Monitor
🐢 Murray River Turtle
🦜 Superb Parrot
🐟 Murray Cod
🐟 Murray Hardyhead
🐟 Southern Purple-spotted Gudgeon
🦆 Australasian Bittern
🦇 Southern Bent-wing Bat
🦅 Regent Honeyeater

These aren’t animals living somewhere far away, they are right here!

They are part of OUR Murray River environment.

Today, we celebrate them — but more importantly, we want to remind our community that protecting habitat, old trees, hollows, waterways and native vegetation is essential if we want these species to remain part of our landscape for generations to come.

At Dutch Thunder Wildlife Rescue protecting our local wildlife is what we do every day.

Our wildlife.
Our river.
Our responsibility.

A HUGE thank you to our wonderful supporter Anikia who has been busy helping us with our never ending fruit chopping — a job our animals certainly appreciate!

And as if that wasn’t enough she also donated some much needed WeetBix and rolled oats to help keep our hungry residents fed.

A LITTLE REMINDER — PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH OUR VOLUNTEERS

We are asking our wonderful community for a little extra patience and understanding at the moment.

Our volunteers have been absolutely flat out this week, attending an enormous number of wildlife rescues — and today alone, we have already responded to 14 rescues with volunteers still out on the road.

Every single call is important to us and we genuinely want to help every animal that needs us. But please remember that we are a 100% volunteer-run rescue service. Our volunteers have families, jobs, responsibilities and just like everyone else, need to eat, sleep and occasionally catch their breath.

We are doing the very best we possibly can, often working long hours, travelling huge distances and dealing with some incredibly challenging and heartbreaking rescues.

💚 Please be patient if we don’t answer immediately.

💚 Please leave a detailed message or text with your location, the animal involved and what has happened.

💚 Please understand that we may be dealing with another emergency when you call.

We promise — we haven’t forgotten you or the animal you’re calling about. We’re just doing our absolute best to get to everyone.

A huge thank you to our incredible volunteers who continue to drop everything to help our wildlife, day and night. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

A huge THANK YOU to all of our regular supporters and donors who continue to stand behind Dutch Thunder Wildlife Rescue. Your generosity helps us rescue, rehabilitate and care for our precious native wildlife 24/7.

We’d especially like to recognise our amazing Community Partners and Sponsors, whose logos are now proudly displayed on our rescue vehicle.

Your support is more than just a donation — it’s our community coming together to protect the wildlife we all care about.

A special thank you also goes to The Sign Society for doing such a fantastic job bringing it all together. We absolutely love how our rescue vehicle is looking!

To every business, organisation and individual who supports Dutch Thunder — thank you for believing in what we do. We couldn’t do it without you!
