Bee Swarms - What to Know This Spring

It’s that time of year when you might notice a few more bee swarms buzzing around Kojonup.

Spring is a busy time for bees. As the weather warms up and flowers start blooming, healthy bee colonies grow quickly. When a hive becomes crowded, the queen and thousands of worker bees may leave together to find a new home, this is called swarming.

You might find them gathered in a big cluster on a tree branch, fence, building or other sheltered spot while scout bees search for somewhere new to live.

While they can look a little intimidating, swarming bees are generally not aggressive and are usually just passing through. Give them some space, don’t disturb them and let them do their thing.

If you spot a swarm and are concerned about its location, please contact the Shire of Kojonup on (08) 9831 2400 and our team can provide advice or assistance.

For after hours assistance, please contact Roger Bilney on 0428 341 012.

And remember, bees are pretty important little workers, so wherever possible, relocation is the way to go!
