🐓 ROOSTERS IN THE TOWNSITE OF KOJONUP

Did you know?

Under the Shire of Kojonup Health Local Laws, roosters are not permitted within the gazetted townsite without the written approval of the Shire.

Roosters can create noise impacts for neighbouring residents, particularly during early morning hours, which is why restrictions apply within residential areas.

Residents wishing to keep poultry are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Shire’s Local Laws before purchasing birds.

If you are unsure whether your property is within the gazetted townsite, or would like advice regarding poultry keeping requirements, please contact the Shire of Kojonup.

🐕 COMMUNITY SAFETY MESSAGE 🏡

If an unknown person is loitering around your property and you feel unsafe or threatened, contact the Police immediately. Do not confront the person if doing so may place you at risk.

Residents are reminded not to encourage, direct, or set their dog upon any person. Doing so may result in a dog attack investigation and potential legal consequences.

Where a person unlawfully enters private property without permission and is subsequently bitten or attacked by a dog, authorities will investigate the circumstances of the incident, including whether the dog was acting protectively within its own property and whether any offences have been committed by either party.

If you witness suspicious behaviour:
✅ Stay inside if you feel unsafe.
✅ Contact WA Police on 131 444 (or 000 in an emergency).
✅ Record details such as descriptions, vehicles and registration numbers if it is safe to do so.
✅ Allow Police to manage the situation.

The safest approach is always to report suspicious activity and avoid placing yourself, your family, or your pets at risk

Hoofed animals in townsite:
The Shire of Kojonup recognises that rural lifestyle pursuits are a valued and important part of the Kojonup community. The ability to keep and enjoy large animals is a key aspect of our town’s character and heritage.

At the same time, the Shire is reminding residents that the keeping of large animals within the townsite must be managed in accordance with the Shire’s Health Local Laws to ensure the health, safety and amenity of all residents.

Large animals—including horses, cattle, sheep, goats and similar livestock—can have impacts in more densely settled areas if not appropriately managed. These may include odour, noise, waste, pests, and potential safety concerns.

Under the Health Local Laws, the keeping of large animals within the townsite is regulated and may require approval. Residents are required to ensure that:
• Rural lifestyle activities do not create a nuisance or adversely affect neighbouring properties
• Animals are kept in suitable numbers for the size and zoning of the land
• Adequate space, shelter and secure fencing are provided
• Waste is effectively managed to minimise odour and pests

The Shire supports residents in maintaining a balance between preserving Kojonup’s rural lifestyle and protecting public health and local amenity.

Residents considering keeping large animals within the townsite are encouraged to contact the Shire’s Environmental Health Officer to discuss requirements and ensure compliance.

Great news for our sporting community 💡🏐🏉

The oval and netball court lights have been upgraded to a new online app, at no cost to the Shire or local clubs.

This means the old mobile pin codes will no longer work.
While we get familiar with the new app, all lighting bookings and scheduling will be managed through Hayley Clarke, Works Administrator.

Phone 📞 9831 2400

Sporting clubs will be given access to their club lights through the app soon.

Thanks for your patience while we roll out this new system. We look forward to seeing our courts and oval lit up for training, games and community events. 💡
