Amaroo Environmental Education Centre The Centre is located on the site of the old Kleinton State School, approximately 22kms north of Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.

Amaroo Environmental Education Centre (EEC) is a day visit centre situated in the Darling Downs and South West Region of the Department of Education and Training. We design, promote and deliver highly effective environmental and Indigenous education programs for schools (P-12) and for the community, including building capability of schools with professional development for teachers. In 2015, Amaroo EEC celebrated 40 years and in that time has catered for over 100,000 students from the Darling Downs and South West region; however we are continually looking for new ways of improving our service to schools. Our two pillars that underpin our modis operandi are environmental sustainability and Indigenous perspectives which aligns with two of the Cross Curriculum Priorities of the Australian Curriculum i.e. Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. We provide a manageable level of service delivery and diversify programs across all three models of: Destination, Expert & Partnership. Within these 3 models we design, develop and deliver programs, events and courses for students, teachers and the community. We align all our centre programs to the Australian and Queensland Curricula with specific focus on Science,
History and Geography and Humanities and Social Sciences. Amaroo is an Indigenous word which we believe means 'beautiful place'. The centre is located on Jarowair country which is a sub-group of the Wakka Wakka Nation; we pay respects to the Indigenous elders past, present and future.

Remembering the past. Listening to the stories of Country. Walking forward together.

We attended the Battle of Meewah Commemoration Ceremony today, remembering Multuggerah and the resistance of the Yugara and Jagera peoples, uniting other First Nations Australian groups, during the colonial wars of the Darling Downs.

Led by students from the region, the ceremony reminds us that truth-telling matters — and that reconciliation begins with listening, remembering and learning from the stories that have too often been left unheard.

🐨 A special visitor at AEEC! 🌿

We were lucky enough to spot a koala moving through our bushland this week — always a very special sight at Amaroo Environmental Education Centre!

Encounters like this are a wonderful reminder that our centre, your school grounds, homes and surrounding bushland are more than just places for people. They are home, habitat and pathways for the many creatures we share our world with. 🌏

From large trees and dense understorey to fallen timber, leaf litter and quiet spaces, every part of a healthy habitat can provide something an animal needs — food, shelter, protection or a place to move through.

At AEEC, we’re continuing to learn how we can care for and preserve the habitat we have, while strengthening it for the wildlife that calls this place home.

Sometimes the best way to protect wildlife is simply to notice what is already here. 💚🐨🌿

🌿 Real Schools | Connect & Share

This week we welcomed Real Schools Champions from across our cluster to Amaroo for our second Connect & Share Learning Exchange.

A chance to pause, reconnect and share what is happening in our different school contexts — from affective language and Positive Priming, to P3P3F3, circles, staff engagement and building restorative practice into everyday school life.

There was generosity, curiosity and plenty of “we’re trying this too!” moments. 💛

We’re continuing to learn with one another, not just from one another — building connection and restorative momentum across our cluster.

🌿 Eco Action Network | From ideas to action

It’s been a busy week of Eco Action Network school visits! 🌏

Across three schools, students welcomed us into their spaces, shared what they’ve been noticing and explored the next steps for their environmental action.

From water-wise ideas and school awareness, to sharing existing sustainability initiatives and working through the challenges of getting an action started, students are building their confidence as environmental leaders.

We’re loving seeing students notice, connect, question and take action — and watching those small steps begin to ripple through their school communities. 💚

What a way to finish the week! Amaroo headed out to Crows Nest with students in our catchment connection program.
Students were deeply engaged, respectful, and curious, about the health and wonders of this place in their community. They reflected on the First Nations deep relationships to this special place, sharing commitments of how they see their actions on how to ensure places like these continue into the future. Thank you students and staff for their care today and a fantastic end to the week. 💚🌿

This week at Amaroo EEC we headed into Toowoomba East & West creeks and waterbird habitat with year 7 students to learn about the health of our catchment. By assessing the living and non-living components in this essential ecosystem we live within, students reflected at the completion of the day on a variety of learnings and sparked curiosity around the unique birdlife, aquatic macroinvertebrates and overall health of our waterways, wondering about their impacts upon it.

This week at Amaroo EEC we had some very knowledgeable visitors who shared their love of trees and vowed to protect habitat and biodiversity for future generations in our If Trees Could Talk program.
