Today, Kioloa RFB Captain, Trevor Hodgetts, Brigade President John Meyer and Community Engagement Officer Gabrielle Meyer met with Peter and Jules from Ulladulla NSW Fire and Rescue.

It was a great opportunity to discuss topics of mutual interest, including the Bawley Point and Kioloa Micro Grid and community battery, local water sources and caravan park fire safety and community liaison. We took the opportunity to visit the Kioloa Caravan Park to discuss access arrangements and fire fighting resources with the park’s managers. This jointly gave us a better knowledge of the location of resources for dealing with any outbreak of fire.

The new water pumping and fire hose reel installations, around the park provide an enhanced ability to respond to fire around caravan, camping and cabin accommodation. This will assist both the NSW RFS and NSW Fire and Rescue if responding to an incident. We plan to similarly visit Racecourse and Merry Beach Parks after Easter.

Did you know that NSW Fire and Rescue provide a free Home Safety Visit? Here is an extract from their website:

What is a Safety Visit?

During your Safety Visit, we will attend your home and check that you have working smoke alarms, that they are in good working condition, and are installed in suitable areas. If you do not have one, firefighters will install a long-life battery-powered smoke alarm as well as replace existing smoke alarm batteries all at no cost. With your permission, firefighters will also ask you to show us around your home and property. This will allow us to give you personalised fire safety advice.

Who might benefit from a Safety Visit?

Everyone can benefit from a Safety Visit, however there are people within our communities that are statistically at higher risk of incidents occurring, including:
* Over 65’s.
* Those who live alone.
* People with limited mobility, hearing impairments or vision impairments.
* Residents who are supported by carers, family and friends.
* And anyone with English as a second language.

Kioloa RFB will be at the Easter Markets this Sunday and brigade members will be happy to take your details and pass them on to Peter and Jules should you wish to arrange a safety visit. Alternatively, you may arrange a visit on line via the Fire and Rescue Web Site: https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=9316

The Summer fire risk assessment for the south coast is as many predicted. We will continue to keep our community informed on bushfire readiness over the coming months.

AFAC News has released the Bushfire Seasonal Outlook for Summer. Large areas of eastern, central and northern NSW are expected to see increased risk of fire this summer.

In forested areas affected by the 2019/20 fires, recent rainfall and rapid vegetation regrowth is likely to see an increase of bush fire activity.

If you live, work or are travelling through bush fire prone areas make sure you know what you will do if threatened by fires. Review and discuss your bush fire survival plan.

HIGH FIRE DANGER OCTOBER 1

The fire danger in the Shoalhaven for Sunday October 1 is HIGH.

Permits are automatically suspended and whilst we do not have a total fire ban in place we are asking everyone to be extremely vigilant due to the forecast gusty winds and very high temperatures, combined with low humidity.

All fires should be reported to triple zero ‘000’ immediately as they can spread quickly and put you or others at risk.

❗️Have a plan - know what to do if a grass or bush fire starts ❗️Check any pile burns conducted in the past week
❗️Download ‘HAZARDS NEAR ME’ and set a watch zone

‘Live bush fire ready’.

A timely reminder about likely conditions on Sunday for our Get Ready information sessions at the Murramarang Market. Some good advice here about being ready before Sunday!

****Update****

Due to the showers that fell across some areas of the Shoalhaven in the last 24/48 hours the forecast fire danger rating for Sunday has dropped down into the HIGH range.

Whilst this means the risk is somewhat lower, areas with higher bush fire fuel loads still have a heightened risk and you should still have your bush fire plan prepared.

Winds are still forecast to be quite gusty and localised risks remain.

We will provide further updates into the weekend.

Thanks.

HEADS UP SHOALHAVEN

With increasing temperatures into the weekend, combined with gusty winds it is likley that we will move into an EXTREME fire danger rating on Sunday.

Whilst there has been some showers this week, the coverage has been patchy and with lower than average rainfall since June, vegetation will dry out quickly in just a few days.

On days of EXTREME fire danger you need to take action to protect your life and property.

Having a plan puts you in control. Start today with a family conversation focussing on what you will do if a bush or grass fire threatens you. Plan what you will do,where you will go and when you will leave or if staying to defend, now is the time to test fire fighting equipment and make sure you are prepared.

❗️ On days of EXTREME fire danger a TOTAL FIRE BAN will be in place. Know the rules - visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fdr-and-tobans
❗️On days of EXTREME fire danger, bush and grass fires are more difficult to control and you may have less time to make critical decisions
❗️On days of EXTREME fire danger, travelling through bush land or enjoying activities in remote areas of bush land may increase the risk to you if a fire starts

We will continue to keep you informed as the weather forecast firms up.
