Sadly, 175 Victoria Police members have died in the line of duty. Of these, 30 have been murdered, which underlines the dangers police members face on a daily basis. We can do nothing to bring them back but as a grateful community we can take steps to honour their memory and ensure their sacrifice is acknowledged through a range of projects that benefit the wider community.

Today, 7 September, we remember two members of Victoria Police whose lives and service remain part of our Honour Roll.

Senior Constable Michael John Mitchell 17550
- 7 September 1979

Senior Constable Michael Mitchell died following injuries sustained while performing his duty.

On 7 September 1979, Michael was escorting a wide-load through Port Melbourne when his motorcycle collided with a car at the intersection of Ingles Street and Fennell Street. He was taken to The Alfred Hospital, where he sadly died later that day.

Michael’s passing had a lasting impact on his family and the Victoria Police community. His widow, Pam, became the first police widow to be part of the Police Legacy Scheme, an important part of the enduring support provided to police families following loss.

Michael’s name continues to be honoured through the All Honour Roll Members memorial at Box Hill Hospital, where a major life-saving service was established in honouring the memory of Victoria Police members who have died in the line of duty.

Leading Senior Constable Keith Patterson 25315 - 7 September 2018

Keith joined Victoria Police in 1986, following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a police officer.

A highly respected officer, Keith worked predominantly in general duties and served as a delegate of the Police Association of Victoria.

In 2005, while escorting an offender, Keith sustained a cut to his hand. A serious infection subsequently entered his bloodstream and affected a heart valve. Keith sadly passed away from organ failure on 7 September 2018.

Keith was posthumously awarded the Victoria Police Star in recognition of his service.

Today, we remember Keith, and extend our thoughts to his family, friends and colleagues.

Their stories remind us that behind every name on the Honour Roll is a person, a family, and a community.

Today, we remember Michael Mitchell and Keith Patterson, and all those who have given their lives in service to others.

Last Friday (4th of September) the Melbourne City FC joined with Victoria Police to participate in the Blue Ribbon Cup between VicPol Soccer Club and City FC, as part of their City in The Community initiative.

The day kicked off with Year 9 girls match between Gleneagles SC and Narre Warren South P12 College, followed by the match between the police and the City team of professional players combined with Narre Warren College students.

The Blue Ribbon Cup was also an opportunity to connect with police officers, community leaders, local representatives abs the Blue Ribbon Foundation CEO in an environment that promoted respect, teamwork and belonging.

And the results?! The Gleneagles SC won in the girls match and the City team won in the second match!

We remember First Constable George Carter. He died in the line of duty 21 July 1952 from injuries sustained in a police motorcycle accident.
Constable Carter joined Victoria Police in 1938, he served and protected the community for 14 years.
He was 37 years and sadly he left behind his wife and two young sons.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.
The Victoria Police Star has been posthumously awarded to Constable Carter.
He will always be remembered.💙

Last week the Blue Ribbon Foundation and our North East Branch honoured Constable Joseph Delaney 6389 with a dedication ceremony at Benalla Hospital.
Constable Delaney was a decorated World War I veteran and Victorian police officer who was fatally shot in the line of duty at Tyntynder, near Swan Hill, on August 30, 1923, and passed away on September 3, 1923, at the age of 28.
His memory has been honoured with the branch funding seven overhead hoists and a mobile hoist in the Acute Care Ward at Benalla Hospital.
While Constable Delaney died over 100 years ago, a number of family members live in the Benalla area, some have continued in Joseph's footsteps and are serving Victoria Police members.
Our Northeast Branch continues its commitment in honouring our fallen police members by strengthening regional health services and improving the quality of care in local communities.

Constable Bruckner died from injuries received in a railway line accident in Northcote.

Today e remember Detective Senior Constable Robert ‘Rocky’ Lane – he was tragically killed on 13 July 1979. 💙
DSC Lane was only 32 years, he was married with a young family. Our thoughts are with his wife Val and their family, friends and his Victoria Police colleagues.
His legacy and community service lives on at the Swan Hill Hospital with the 'Robert Lane Resuscitation Unit' dedicated in his honour. Our Swan Hill Blue Ribbon Foundation Branch with support from the local community provided funding to establish unit in the town where he had been based.
Football followers will also remember Robert - he played with Carlton Football Club, Williamstown Football Club in the VFL and in 1976 he captained and coached the then Mid Murray League team Lake Boga to its first Grand Final triumph in a decade.
He will always be remembered.

oday we remember Constable Victor Nelson who died in the line of duty - 12 July 1925.
Constable Nelson died from injuries received while rescuing an elderly man who had been badly burnt in a house fire near Shepparton. He paid the ultimate sacrifice in serving and protecting his community.
During his career with Victoria Police he had been stationed at Russell St, Prahan, Armadale, Geelong and Shepparton.
Constable Nelson was just 38 years and sadly left behind his wife Madge and their four children. Some of his family including his great-grandchildren now serve with Victoria Police.
On the 24th of August 2022, Victor and fellow officer Senior Constable Ian Crilly (13 August 1994) were honoured when Shepparton Hospital (GV Health) Emergency Department Isolation Room attached to the Emergency Department was named in their honour.
He will always be remembered 💙
