STAY SAFE
It’s been a wild and windy weekend on Kangaroo Island!
Please be careful on the roads as there is a lot of surface water about, floods, debris and potentially trees down.
Please do not drive into flood water if you are unsure of the depth – or the water is fast-moving.

KI Firefighters honoured by SA CFS Chief Officer
Three Kangaroo Island firefighters have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to keeping the island and its community safe.
KI Deputy Group Officer Kayne Davis – and Kingscote Brigade members Kerryn Fricke and Warren Stancliffe – were presented with Certificates of Commendation by SA Country Fire Service Chief, Brett Loughlin.
Kerryn and Warren received the Chief Officer’s Certificate of Commendation for their “amazing enthusiasm, collaboration, motivation, and action . . . well above what would normally be expected of two firefighters”.
The Commendation nomination recognised the ‘behind the scenes’ work of these quiet achievers who, over the past year, have advocated for development of greater operational support processes, skills and resources that will support Kangaroo Island into the future.
“Both members have actively engaged with Operations Support members from other brigades across Kangaroo Island, encouraging a connectiveness between brigades. They are keen to ensure that all brigades across the group are included in the roles associated with Operation Support functions.
“These members support ongoing development of skills and continuity of the Operations Support Capacity of Kangaroo Island. They are also building relationships with other Region 1 Operational Support brigades and members to grow their own knowledge and skills whilst strengthening relationships across the whole region”.
Kayne Davis received his Chief Officer’s Certificate of Commendation for his “strong sense of fairness” - ensuring CFS communication on Kangaroo Island was “broad and inclusive of all members”.
“Over the past 12-18 months, Kayne’s organised and efficient approach to sourcing and providing accurate information to all members across Kangaroo Island is to be commended.
“He has used multiple methods of communication based on what is best for the receiver – which often means he is distributing the same information multiple times, in multiple formats to a large variety of people.
“When Kayne took on the role, he embarked on a journey to ensure that information from meetings was accurate and transparent. He embraced new minute formats and encouraged the use of action lists and followed through to make sure they were correct and monitored.”
These Awards have highlighted the fact that every member of the CFS has an important role to play – whether on the fire ground or behind the scenes.
Kangaroo Island’s CFS Brigades are always keen to recruit new members – and will guide and support them in whatever role they choose.
If you are interested in volunteering with the CFS – but not keen on attending incidents – there are plenty of other jobs on offer.

CHIMNEY MAINTENANCE & HOME SAFETY FOR WINTER

The recent dip in temperatures overnight is seeing an increase in people using fireplaces, combustion heaters and gas or electrical heaters to keep warm.
With winter quickly approaching, now is a good time for households to have their flues and chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned to ensure they are corrosion-free and there is no soot or chemical build up.
Dirty or damaged flues, clogged chimneys, and unmaintained heating systems can result in fires that cause significant property damage and put lives at risk. The best way to reduce this risk is to prepare your home for the colder weather. Every year in regional SA, the CFS is responded to house fires caused by poor maintenance of heating systems, equipment failure, or items being placed too close to heat sources.
For your family’s safety, it is recommended that you have your chimneys and flues inspected and cleaned at least once a year, ideally at the start of winter. This should always be carried out using a qualified tradesperson, and as recommended by the manufacturer.
Other simple steps for safe home heating include:
Installing a secure guard or fireproof screen around any open fire;
Keeping the area around a heater or open fire clear of flammable materials, particularly synthetics, as these can easily melt and catch fire when they are too hot;
Supervising children and pets around heaters and open fires, and ensuring matches and lighters are out of reach of children;
Ensuring electric blankets and heaters are regularly maintained and replaced;
Safely disposing of hot ashes - never place these in household bins, plastic buckets, or council bins; and
Ensuring all open flames and heaters are extinguished/turned off before going to bed or leaving the house.
It is also important to ensure you have an appropriate number of working smoke alarms installed, so in the event of a fire, you can be alerted and safely evacuate your property in time.

We are building a database of people who are interested in helping with the many 'behind the scenes' roles that help our incidents run more smoothly and take the pressure off of the 'firefighters'.
This questionnaire is for both CFS members and the community. We would like anyone willing to assist during our busy times to let us know about their skills and availability.
Thank you

Over the weekend, South Australia's Fire Danger Season concluded for all remaining Fire Danger Districts.

Whilst weather conditions may be easing, caution should be exercised before considering any burning or risky activities. Today alone our volunteers have responded to at least three burn-offs that have gotten out of control.

For residents in bushfire-prone areas, autumn and winter are a good opportunity to prune overgrowth and clean-up around houses and sheds.

Fire permits have been issued to western Kangaroo Island landholders for burning piles of pine tree waste.

Please note that smoke smells and sightings can be expected from now on for a number of weeks around (but not limited to) the Karatta area.

This is also a good time to remind that farmers are often granted permits to burn stubble and grassland for seeding of new season crops.

If you do still see a fire that looks not to be an attended burn off, call 000.
