The Kinship Earthship in Kinglake, Victoria, is an eco-friendly residence inspired by Earthship (biotecture) and permaculture principles, emphasizing sustainability and resilience. Constructed using second-hand and upcycled materials, it features passive solar design, eliminating the need for conventional heating or cooling systems. The home is designed to operate off-grid, utilizing solar, wind,
and geothermal energy sources. It processes all grey and black water, harvests rainwater, and supports indoor and outdoor food cultivation. Additionally, the structure is engineered to be fire and flood-resistant, a crucial consideration following the Black Saturday bushfires. The project is a blend of retrofitting an original mudbrick home and constructing a new two-bedroom dwelling inspired by the Global Model Earthship design. Through a series of workshops, nearly 200 individuals have contributed to the rebuild, highlighting a strong community involvement. The long-term vision for Kinship includes serving as a space for bioculture and permaculture education, as well as a sanctuary for trauma recovery and healing. For those interested in sustainable building design and practices, Kinship offers tours and workshops.
