It’s been an interesting week. I’ve spent most of it with my fellow candidates getting to know them. And I can now say most do appear on the surface at least to be a group of people who want to work together and do the best for our wonderful community.
On Tuesday I brokered an agreement between all the lead candidates to reduce the number of signs at pre-polling. It was just ridiculous, and to be frank, somewhat intimidating. The sheer number of signs left no room for people handing out how to vote cards. They were left with no option than to use the footpath which only left a small tunnel for voters to walk through. I remember myself, as a voter in the past, how uncomfortable this made me feel and I’m not the shy retiring type. I decided to do something.
Firstly, I got the lead candidates to come to an agreement regarding signs. Secondly, I took the decision to remove myself from the pack. Why should I subject other people to something I do not like myself? I stopped handing out my how to vote cards. Instead, I placed them in a small brochure holder and attached it to my major sign near the main entrance. Voters can simply take one if they wish to read my material. I’m around if people want to speak to me, I’m in my white Vote 1 Group B t-shirt. My approach to pre-polling may ultimately hurt my numbers, but I’m happy in the knowledge I’ve not added to anyone’s anxiety.
Unfortunately, our agreement was broken by a major party, almost immediately. However, most of us have decided to stand by our commitments for pre-polling. As I said I think most of the lead candidates are a group of people who can work together.
