Tragic news overnight out of the North Coast. Our thoughts are with their friends, families, fellow volunteers, along with the greater Marine Rescue community as they deal with this tragedy. 🩵

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

We often get messages and phone calls about having smoke alarms checked, while it’s not a service the NSW RFS offer it most certainly is a service our mates over at Fire and Rescue NSW Station 358 Laurieton offer! Give them a bell if you need your smoke alarms checked, I’m sure they’d be happy to help!

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be undertaking a 39 hectare hazard reduction burn in Lake Innes Nature Reserve adjacent to The Point Drive, Port Macquarie, commencing Thursday 16 April.

Smoke will be visible from Port Macquarie and may impact surrounding residents, but the hazard reduction should be complete by Thursday afternoon.

Lake Innes NR will be closed in this vicinity for the duration of the event, but the Googik Track will remain open.

A reminder to please only call Triple Zero (000) if you can see an unattended fire. For more information, visit the Hazards Near Me app or the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/hr

A couple of weeks ago we were had a visit from our local state member Rob Dwyer, he attended our station to present some certificates to our members after recognising their hard work and dedication in parliament!

While he was visiting he checked out our station upgrade/ extension that his office has supported us with funding from the Community Building Partnership Grant which was very much appreciated!

Thanks for the visit Rob!

Today, 31 March, marks the end of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for the majority of NSW including Mid Coast and Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA.

While many landholders may no longer require a fire permit, you are still required to notify the RFS and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours before lighting the fire.

For more information on the bush fire danger period and fire permits, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

On Tuesday we were invited by Fire and Rescue NSW Station 358 Laurieton to their station for some training, which included getting to know their trucks and what they call some of their rescue equipment, and watching how they extricate patients out of vehicles in motor vehicle accidents (MVA) in a controlled environment.

This training exercise not only helps us help them at MVA’s where we most commonly work alongside each other but was a terrific way to get to know the crew and just have a chat while not under the pump at an incident.

We hope this will be the first of many joint training exercises to build a strong healthy relationship between the two organisations in the local area.

Thanks again to Stu and the team for inviting us over it was great!
