The Australian Volunteer Coast Guard is an all-volunteer organisation. Keppel Sands provide a marine search and rescue service and radio monitoring.
All Coast Guard vessels involved in marine rescue operations are required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Marine Safety Queensland to be maintained to commercial survey standards. That is, the same standards required for Commercial ships. This requirement places significantly higher costs on flotillas.
All year our vessels must be ready to respond 24 hours per day to emergencies at sea. Our volunteers are required to have specialist training including how to be safe at sea. It usually takes a volunteer up to two years to be a qualified vessel skipper (coxswain).
WHAT WE DO
Coast Guard CQ cover an area from as far south to Cape Capricorn, north to Percy Group, east to the Swains and the bounds of the Fitzroy river and waterways.
Annually, Coast Guard perform hundreds of on water assistance. Assistance ranges from sinking vessels, flat batteries, no fuel, mechanical problems and run aground. Often assistance includes towing vessels back to the nearest safe harbour.
Coast Guard may be tasked to conduct Search and Rescue (SAR) and Medivac.
