A massive congratulations to our very own Group Captain Peter Bennett on being announced in the Kings Birthday honours list and being awarded the Australia Fire Service Medal for distinguished service, an incredible honour that is well deserved for a staggering over 50 years of service!🏅

Peter has been a member of our Brigade (officially) since 1974, and has held every field officer position, including Captain since then.😊

Peter and the Bennett family have made an invaluable contribution to the development of our Brigade, the safety and skill of generations of firefighters right across the mountains and to bushfire safety and mitigation for decades. 👩🏻‍🚒🧑🏽‍🚒🚒🔥

We are incredibly proud to be able to call him one of our own and congratulate him and his family on this incredible honour.❤️

Congratulations Pete!👏

🔥NGULA BULGARABANG HAZARD REDUCTION🌲

Our crew from Katoomba/Leura RFS attended a NPWS HR out at Ngula Bulgarabang today.

Our troops on the ground reported that it was a really good day with great inter-agency cooperation and a good result.

The area has not been burned in over 45 years, so this was an important and successful day.

A massive thank you to our volunteers and everyone involved in today’s efforts👏🏼

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,

Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
Aa
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted:

They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

Lest We Forget🌺

🔥GEES ARM NORTH - HAZARD REDUCTION🧑‍🚒

Yesterday Katoomba/Leura sent a crew to the Hawkesbury to assist the National Parks and Wildlife Service with a hazard reduction in the Upper Colo area.

Our crew was tasked with burning fuel loads on the ground surrounding private properties that backed on to Wollemi National Park.

Our crew is now safely back in the mountains but a massive thank you to our members who travelled out of the area to assist neighbouring communities with this important work.

Enjoy these wonderful photos!

To cap off a very busy week of hazard reductions in the Blue Mountains a crew from Katoomba/Leura RFS attended the fourth and final stage of the Kenny Street hazard reduction near Mt Victoria with other RFS Brigades and NSW Fire and Rescue.

Conditions have been perfect this week and our firefighters on the ground report the burn has gone in extremely well.

Operations on this burn will continue tomorrow and Sunday evening.

A massive thank you to all our firefighters putting in the work on the ground and special congratulations to our former Captain Peter Bennett for the extraordinary amount of planning work that has gone into this burn over several years.

You did it Pete!👏🏼

✈️AEROPLANE HILLS, HAZARD REDUCTION🔥

Today a crew from Katoomba/Leura RFS joined other Mountains RFS Brigades, NPWS firefighters and FRNSW to undertake a large 2,500 ha burn in the Aeroplane Hills region, south of the Lawson area.

With perfect weather conditions the burn went in extremely well as evidenced by the enormous smoke plume that was visible from across the mountains and from the plains.

Congratulations to our new members Brad and Glenn on their very first hazard reduction!

Hopefully the first of many to come!❤️

There are several more hazard reduction planned across the mountains in the coming days.
