🔥 Turns out the bushies scrub up alright… 🔥

We swapped the PPC for something a little fancier last weekend and headed to Perth for the 2026 WAFES Awards!

We had an incredible night and feel very lucky to have been recognised as a finalist in the Volunteer Firefighting Team Achievement Award.

A huge shoutout goes to our entire brigade. This recognition belongs to every member who has given their time, put in the work, turned up when it mattered and helped make Nickol Bay what it is today.

While we didn’t come home with the win, getting the chance to celebrate our crew and see Nickol Bay recognised on a state stage was easily the best part of the night. ❤️🚒

We might not be ones to make too much of a fuss, but this is definitely something we’re pretty bloody proud of.

Congratulations to all the finalists and winners - it was a privilege to be among some incredible people doing great things across WA’s emergency services.

Now that’s out of the way… Bring on the 2026/27 fire season! 🔥🚒

🔥Back to Basics with the Bushies 🔥

This week we swapped the trucks for the whiteboard (only for a little while! 😜) and got stuck into the nitty gritty when it comes to Red Flag Warnings and Emergency Warnings.

We worked through what they mean, when they’re issued, and why getting the message right is just as important as getting the firefighting right. A well-informed crew is a safer, more effective crew.

Turns out there’s a bit more to firefighting than putting wet stuff on hot stuff! Every training night is another opportunity to build our knowledge, sharpen our skills, and be ready for whatever comes next.

🚒 Back to Basics with the Bushies—because even the most experienced bushies know the fundamentals are what keep us one step ahead. 🔥💪

Think you’ve got what it takes? We’re always looking for a few more good Bushies. Send us a message and come along to a training night. 🚒

🌿🚒 Back to Basics with the Bushies! 🚒🌿

This week’s Back to Basics session saw our crew complete a NUCOMS practical on hand tools and equipment.

The team got hands-on with:
🔥 Rakehoes – creating mineral earth breaks and blacking out hot spots.
🪵 Standpipes – setting up a reliable water supply from static water sources.
🛢️ Drip torches – understanding safe operation and their role in planned burning and backburning.
🔧 Bar and key – because sometimes getting access to hydrants is just as important as putting water on the fire.

💪 It might not be the flashiest gear on the truck, but knowing how and when to use these tools can make all the difference on the fireground.

A great night sharpening skills, building confidence, and sharing plenty of laughs along the way. Every training night helps ensure our volunteers are ready when the call comes.

Want to learn practical skills and be part of a great team? We’d love to have you join us!

🧯 Back to Basics with the Bushies 🧯

Turns out, the best way to fight fire… is knowing which extinguisher to grab first. 😉

This week our bushies swapped the big white trucks for the little red cylinders, brushing up on fire extinguisher basics.

Members got stuck into:
🔥 Matching the right extinguisher to the right fire (because water isn’t always the answer!)
🧯 PASS technique – Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep
💨 Plenty of hands-on practice

It’s easy to think, “It’s only a little fire,” but having the right knowledge can make all the difference before it becomes a big one.

They say practice makes perfect… we say practice makes prepared. Another great night with the crew, building skills, sharing a few laughs, and proving that the only thing better than putting out a fire is knowing how to do it safely.

Travelling through the Pilbara this bushfire season? 🚙🔥

It’s beautiful country up here, but bushfire risk is real – so let’s all do our bit to stay safe.

✅ Put out cigarette butts responsibly. Never toss them from a car.
✅ Check if there are any fire restrictions before you set up camp.
✅ Camping? Make sure your campfire is completely out before you leave. Don’t bury it—use water to extinguish it fully.
✅ Pack a bushfire survival kit with a map, portable radio, first aid kit, woollen blankets, spare batteries, and plenty of drinking water.
✅ Always check the daily Fire Danger Rating – it tells you how risky conditions are if a fire starts nearby.
✅ Download the Emergency WA app to stay updated on alerts, warnings, Fire Danger Ratings, and Total Fire Bans.
✅ If you see signs of a bushfire in the distance, like smoke or flames, carefully pull over to the side of the road to assess the situation and call triple zero. If it is safe to do so, turn around and leave the area immediately.

🏡 If you live in the area, get your home bushfire-ready by tidying up the yard and making a bushfire plan.

📲 And don’t forget to download the Emergency WA app to stay updated on alerts, warnings, Fire Danger Ratings, and Total Fire Bans.

✨ A fresh shine for the Fire Support Vehicle! 🚒

A massive shout out to the legends at P.S.P Mobile Detailing for giving our Fire Support Vehicle a full polish and bringing the paintwork back to life.

Living and operating in the Pilbara isn’t kind to our vehicles, so having local businesses willing to support our brigade means a lot. The wagon is looking an absolute treat and will certainly turn a few heads around town.

From all of us at Nickol Bay Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, thank you for your generosity and for backing your local volunteers. We really appreciate your support.

If you’re looking for quality detailing, give the team at P.S.P Mobile Detailing a call – they certainly know how to make a vehicle shine! 👌

What an incredible day! 🚒🔥

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came down to WA Day on Saturday and made our Inaugural Bushies Boot Camp such a fantastic success!

We had hundreds of kids (and plenty of adults too!) step up to the challenge and test their skills as volunteer Bush Fire Brigade members. From tackling running with a hose, to putting the fire out in our special made firehouse, it was amazing to see so much enthusiasm, determination and plenty of smiles throughout the day.

Seeing so many future firefighters having a go was definitely a highlight for our brigade! 👩‍🚒👨‍🚒

📸 Did your little (or big!) firefighter take part? We’d love to see it! If you snapped any photos or videos during the day, please share them in the comments or tag Nickol Bay Bush Fire Brigade so we can see all of our future Bushies in action.

🔥 Ever thought about becoming a volunteer?
We’re always looking for new members to join our brigade. Whether you’re interested in active firefighting, supporting the community, or learning valuable new skills, we’d love to welcome you.

🚒 Training is held every Tuesday night from 6:00pm at the Nickol Bay Bush Fire Brigade Station.

Come along, meet the team, and see what being a Bushie is all about. You never know—you might just find your next adventure.
