EX-CAPTAIN WALTER “WALLY” ANDERSON
Line of Duty Death — 14th November 1961

The Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade is proud to share that following an extensive review of brigade minutes, coroner records, media clippings etc - our member Walter (Wally) James Anderson has been formally recognised as a line of duty death.

Ex-Captain Anderson, who formally stood down from the Captaincy on 30th of June 1961 (after 18 diligent years in the role), was alerted to a Structure Fire at or near “Masteika’s Joinery” (near the KF Railway Station) on the 14th of November 1961.
As was typical of Wally, he dropped everything (including a customer with a full trolley of groceries) at his grocery business in High Street, and attended to the call.

Sadly, the panic and turmoil of the fire resulted in Wally suffering from a cardiac arrest - and by the time the ambulance arrived at Bendigo Hospital, Wally was sadly declared deceased.

Due to some inaccuracies and ambiguity in the wording of minutes from the brigade and CFA when Wally “stood down” from the captaincy (the minutes recalled that he had “retired”, as opposed to “retired from the captaincy, but remained an active member”) - Wally’s ultimate sacrifice was never recognised as a Line of Duty Death.

When researching brigade history in 2022, in preparation for KFFB’s 150th anniversary in 2023, this historic injustice was picked up by 3rd Lieutenant Ben Miller, and he and Captain James O’Brien set out to right a significant wrongdoing on behalf of the brigade and Wally’s family. (It’s fair to say they drove this one hard, and rightly so!)

After a long time of campaigning, a service will be held tomorrow (Friday 8th May) in Canberra, where Wally will be honoured at the AFAC memorial on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, by the Governor General - Ms Sam Mostyn AC.

Today, Captain James O’Brien and Firefighter Stewart Davey (Walter’s Grandson), along with John Davey (Stewart’s Brother) are travelling to Canberra to attend this service.

65 years on, we still remember, Wally.

For anyone who would like to witness this momentous occasion, a live stream has been setup and can be viewed here:

The event will be taking place from 8:45am until 10am, tomorrow morning.

Today we recognise those who's duty it is to run towards danger when others are told to leave.

On International Firefighter Day, we thank our incredible CFA members and all of those who protect communities in times of crisis and every day in between.

Your courage, commitment and care don't go unnoticed.

🔥Key Fire Safety Essentials

Fire is dangerous, but there’s a lot you can do to protect yourself, your family and your home.

1. Install and maintain smoke alarms:

Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home. Test them regularly and replace batteries and units as needed.

2. Identify and remove fire hazards:

Check for overloaded power boards, damaged cords, unattended candles, and clutter near heat sources.

Keep flammable items away from stoves, heaters and open flames.

3. Create and practice a home fire escape plan:

Plan at least two ways out of every room.

Choose a safe meeting place outside.

Practice the plan with everyone in the household.

4. If a fire occurs: get out, stay out, and call 000:

Never go back inside for belongings, instead go to your safe meeting place.
