Kalbar School of Arts Memorial Hall

Kalbar School of Arts Memorial Hall Public Memorial Hall - available for HIRE Origins:

The Australian Schools of Arts were modelled on the British Mechanics’ Institute.

The first institute was established in London in 1824 to improve the education of working men by instructing them in various trades. These institutes became popular and soon became a movement. Across the 19th century their role broadened to deliver adult education in general. The concept was soon adopted throughout the British Empire during the 19th century. The first School of Arts in Queensland

was established in Brisbane in 1849 to provide services to the community in literary, philosophic and scientific subjects. Once again their popularity grew and by the late 1890s some 350 schools were established across Queensland. The “Arts” in School of Arts should be considered as manual arts or practical skill training. Function:

Quite clearly the Schools of Arts in Queensland adopted a broader approach to community education and social development. For the first School of Arts committee in Queensland, established in Brisbane in 1849, the aim was ‘the advancement of the community in literary, philosophic and scientific subjects’. Across time these schools were highly valued as adult education providers and as venues for social activities within the community . The government made land available, assisted with building costs and the purchase of books. Renting of the school facilities to the community was also an important source of revenue. Key functions of Schools of Arts included:

- Technical classes (part of the education charter of a school) until 1908 when the function was taken over by a Technical College Committee.
- Library services (albeit by subscription) until the 1970s. In the late 19th century books were scarce and expensive so this service was highly valued by the aspiring and rising middle classes.
- Adult education activities.
- Providing a venue for community activities (e.g. room rental)

Current Status:

Schools of Arts played an important role in the community from the mid-19th century to almost the mid-20th century. However, the services they provided are now by enlarge delivered through the state government or local councils. For example, as the cities have grown the technical classes have been taken over by state government departments, and libraries taken over by local councils. This has meant different purpose built premises are used. The Schools of Arts buildings, assets and liabilities have been taken over by the local councils. Nevertheless these buildings are used by local councils to provide social services either by themselves or rental of the facilities. Challenges:

The Schools of Arts movement faced many challenges:

The Queensland Government became responsible for technical education in 1908. So it wasn’t long before technical education was conducted elsewhere. Financial support was withdrawn during the depression years which made it difficult for many schools to survive. The Libraries Act of 1943 which provided for free libraries in Queensland caused many schools to close. Library lending was an important source of funding for many schools. The need to relocate, extend and maintain buildings during the early years of growth and independence.

🔎 What’s on next week?

The old girl looked resplendent last night as she lit up for Light Up Kalbar. Taking centre stage as the home of the community Christmas tree, the Kalbar School of Arts (KSOA) put her best festive foot forward as a record crowd counted down to the explosion of lights and fireworks.

She can’t put her feet up for Christmas just yet, though, with a busy week ahead. You are most welcome to join us for our final monthly meeting of the year, when festive drinks and nibbles are on the agenda for KSOA and the Kalbar Progress Association, from 6pm onwards. What a great night to come along and find out what we’re all about.

Today is International Volunteer Day and what better time to gratefully acknowledge all those who put up their hands to support the Kalbar School of Arts and Memorial Hall.

Whether you’ve washed a cup or wrangled a marquee, organised an event or attended a meeting, poured a cuppa or sold a raffle ticket, you are part of a wonderful group of community-minded folk maintaining our beautiful historic hall.

Today’s volunteers stand on the shoulders of those who’ve gone before, to keep the hall open and operational, and to preserve its history and heritage for future generations.

As the 2025 International Volunteers Day theme says, every contribution matters.

Our hall is used for many varied and interesting activities. Last weekend we welcomed Scenic Rim artist Caroline Gasteen who ran a one-day botanical cyanotype class. Budding artists learned how to combine plants and blooms, treated paper, sunlight, and water to create magical creations.

Caroline says, ‘art is about curiosity, discovery, and connection — it’s something anyone can be part of, and I love creating spaces where people feel free to explore and make’.

Thank you for hiring the Kalbar School of Arts and Memorial Hall to create such a space.

🔎 What’s on next week?

🎅🏻 Six more sleeps until Santa visits Kalbar School of Arts! He’s paying another special visit to Kalbar prior to his big night of work on Christmas Eve. Light Up Kalbar kicks off at 5.30pm and Santa will arrive on Edward Street at 6.30pm. He’s looking forward to talking to children outside the hall where the Christmas tree will be lit around 7.30pm, followed by fireworks.

🎄 Edward Street will be closed between George and Ann Streets from mid-afternoon onwards for the festive street party. Come and enjoy live music by Griffin County, the Salvos, and the Kalbar State School choir. And there’ll be food from your local favourites as well as food stalls, street entertainment, free face painting and balloon art, and the Christmas lights tractor parade.

Update: We are so grateful for the offers of support we have received. The Council’s parks team is going to kindly assist with the tree’s removal. We wish our community safety in the upcoming rounds of storms.

Can you help?

Sadly, a tree at the School of Arts came down in Monday’s storm. We’re seeking the support of a kind volunteer or team of volunteers with the right equipment and transport who can assist with breaking down and removing the tree, or who can reduce it to mulch for donation to locals.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated, particularly as we have the Light Up Kalbar Community event coming up on 6 December. Please either comment or send us a message.

Thank you for supporting your community hall.

🔎 What’s on next week?

🎄 The Christmas tree has arrived! Even during the day, unlit, it looks jolly and bright. We look forward to seeing it come to life at night in just two weeks’ time. The lights will get switched on for Light Up Kalbar on 6 December, thanks to major sponsors Kalbar Progress Association Inc. and Community Bank Kalbar & District.

🎄 The event kicks off at 5.30pm with bands, face painters, street entertainers and food vans. The tree will be lit around 7.30pm, after Santa’s arrival at the end of the tractor parade and before the fireworks display.

🚽 Today is the United Nation’s International World Toilet Day. True story!

🧻 We continue to be grateful for the assistance we received in upgrading our bathrooms to a standard worthy of the many events held in our community hall. Thank you Kalbar Progress Association Inc., SKOEE building contractors, Community Bank Kalbar & District, Jon Krause MP, and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Queensland.

💧 We are particularly grateful on this day, in light of the billions of people across the world who live without safe and clean sanitation.

🔎 What’s on next week?

🎄 Kalbar is starting to look Christmassy and, by the end of the week, there may be a very exciting addition in front of the hall, in preparation for Light Up Kalbar on 6 December. The Emporium Kalbar Christmas windows have been revealed, shops are filling with festive treats, and the Christmas Lights Competition for local homes and businesses is open for entries at Boonah & Kalbar Mitre 10 (Kalbar branch).

🎅🏻 Saturday sees our beautiful hall being used for the much-anticipated annual Santa photos. We understand that, as this post was written, only three precious slots remained for affordable photos in a peaceful, easily accessible setting. If they are still available, you may be a lucky last to secure a spot via https://www.ticketebo.com.au/kalbar-progress-association/kalbar-santa-photos-2025

🔎 What’s on next week?

We were delighted to welcome a crime writers retreat to the hall this weekend, complete with a scene of crime worthy of Senior Constable Phil Ortlipp’s investigation! The writers enjoyed the peace and quiet of the hall for writing while also getting out and about in the town, enjoying some legendary country hospitality.

If you would like to host an event at the hall, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your ideas. We love facilitating your creativity.
