The Unveiling of Duncan Fysh Drive - Tuesday 01 September 2026

A few words from Mayor Janene Fegan, which were said on the day.

"To name an airport road after Duncan Fysh is just perfect, because flying was practically in his DNA. The Fysh name is famous across the country for its ties to early aviation, Duncan took great pride in that history.

Duncan was certainly passionate about keeping the memory alive of that very first Qantas flight, landing right here in the McKinlay Shire back in November 1922.

But as we all know, Duncan wasn't just about looking backward, he was also looking ahead. For over 55 years out at Proa Station, alongside his partner in crime, Judy, he showed exactly what outback grit and ingenuity looked like. When things got tough with the drought, he didn't just sit back, he pivoted. He used the artesian water to start the Proa Red Claw Farm, creating a fantastic boost for both local agriculture and tourism.

More than anything, Duncan loved bringing people together and he loved a good yarn. For years, Proa Station was the home of the famous Proa Fly-In. Pilots and visitors from all over the country would touch down on the property, drawn in by Duncan's absolute love of flying and the legendary hospitality he and Judy offered everyone who dropped by.

Duncan looked at our wide open skies and saw adventure and community. While he might have caught his final flight to the skies back in 2023, his legacy is now permanently etched into the black soils of Julia Creek."
