NSW SES - Snowy River Unit

NSW SES - Snowy River Unit The Snowy River Unit (South East Zone) is the local State Emergency Service unit for Snowy Region.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, sto

rm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

Are you prepared to play safely in the Alpine region this snow season?

Operation Snow Safe is underway, and reminds skiers, snowboarders and visitors to the Snowy Mountain region to prioritise safety on and off the slopes.

Last snow season was the busiest on record for NSW SES specialist NSW SES Alpine Search and Rescue Unit volunteers, who were kept busy with an average of two rescue tasks each week from June to October, responding in darkness, blizzards and poor weather conditions.

This week, NSW SES members joined NSW Police Force, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Winter Olympic Medallist Josie Baff to launch operation Snow Safe 2026.

Our members continue to stand ready to support Snowy Monaro Police District with calls for assistance this snow season, however we urge people heading to the slopes to be prepared:

❄️ Check the weather forecast so you’re not caught off guard by dangerous weather conditions. Conditions in the mountains can change quickly.

📲 Download the Hazards Near Me App for real-time warnings and updates in your area.

🗻 Carry chains for your tyres and use them where required during slippery road conditions.

⛷️ If you plan on venturing into remote areas, hire a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) so rescuers find you quickly in an emergency.

🚤 Who Let The Boats Out? 🌊

Today, SES crews across the state took part in “Who Let The Boats Out” — a multi-agency training exercise designed to strengthen teamwork and coordination during real-life emergency events.

Working alongside St John Ambulance and Cooma SES, volunteers participated in a range of on-water scenarios, building skills, sharing knowledge, and learning new tips and tricks from each other.

Exercises like this are a great reminder of how important collaboration is when it comes to keeping our communities safe. A big thank you to everyone involved for their dedication and teamwork! 👏

Late last night, our team was once again called out for an overnight rescue in challenging conditions. With very high winds and cold, wet weather, three 17-year-old boys camping on the Main Range were at risk of hypothermia.
Our unit, working alongside NSW Ambulance, responded and safely recovered all three in the early hours of the morning.
A timely reminder to always check weather conditions, carry appropriate gear, and know when to call for help.

Last night, SES volunteers assisted NSW Ambulance with the recovery of a 17-year-old boy who sustained a leg injury on Mount Twynam.
Unable to walk from the location, the patient was carried by stretcher until 4WD road access was reached, then transported by our SES side-by-side vehicle to Charlotte Pass and taken by ambulance to hospital.

Yesterday afternoon, the SES assisted in a land search for a missing 17-year-old runner in the Kosciuszko National Park.

The runner had reportedly planned an 8 km run but travelled much farther than intended. SES resources were deployed as part of a coordinated multi-agency response with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and NSW Police Force with vehicles successfully accessing Tin Mine Hut, and returning once the runner was extracted.

The runner was extracted by a NSW RFS - Snowy Monaro District helicopter and transported to Dead Horse Gap, where he was assessed by NSW Ambulance.

The SES acknowledges the strong interagency cooperation that contributed to the successful outcome and reminds members of the public to adequately plan, prepare, and communicate before undertaking outdoor activities.
