Welcome everyone, this is Booderee. A bay of plenty, with stunning beaches and surprising wildlife.

Yirinbul otherwise known as Australian wood ducks (𝐶ℎ𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑎 𝑗𝑢𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑎) have been seen conducting successful patrols of Booderee National Park. Witnesses report the suspect was grazing on grass, looking highly stylish as always. The team have confirmed this behaviour is completely normal. 😌

These budjaan (birds) are one of Australia's most distinctive waterbirds, often found around wetlands, grassy areas and open woodlands. A birdwatchers favourite, they're known for a very confident strut. 👏

While we know they're very cute, we do ask that people enjoy these creatures from distance, and also remind everyone to not feed the birds.

Can you spot the difference? 👀🦘

Booderee is home to a variety of native macropods, including the Buru (eastern grey kangaroo) and Buruill (swamp wallaby). They might look similar at first glance, but there are a few clues to help you tell these Booderee locals apart.

🦘 Buru: Larger in size, with grey-brown fur and long, powerful legs. They’re also more social and are often spotted feeding or resting together in groups known as mobs.

🌿 Buruill: Smaller and stockier, with darker fur and a lighter chest. While kangaroos mostly graze, swamp wallabies prefer to browse on leaves, ferns and shrubs.

The next phase of the Booderee National Park entry precinct upgrade works will begin on Monday 12 October.

During the works, traffic arrangements at the entry precinct will change:

All vehicles entering the park and requiring access to Ellmoos Road will need to take a detour via Cave Beach Road.

The right-hand lane normally used by residents and service vehicles entering the park will be closed. This lane will be used by all vehicles exiting the park.

Inbound traffic will be diverted through the visitor carpark using the two inside (left) lanes.

Please allow extra time for your journey and follow all signage and directions from traffic control personnel.

Further updates will be provided as the project progresses.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while these improvements are carried out.

Planning a trip to beautiful Booderee National Park? Visitors are encouraged to buy their park entry pass online before arriving due to the temporary closure of the park entry stations.

Buy your pass online before you arrive then print and display for quick and easy entry - https://book.parksaustralia.gov.au/passes/booderee/

If you haven’t been able to buy your park pass ahead of time, don’t worry! Just drop into the Booderee Visitor Centre on your way into the park or stop at the mobile van at the Jervis Bay Supermarket and our friendly staff will be able to help - follow the signs from the gate to find us.

Remember, the less time you have to spend on admin, the more time you have to enjoy Booderee's stunning beaches, bushwalks and wildlife.

Temporary closure | Booderee Botanic Gardens

Booderee Botanic Gardens will be temporarily closed from 8am to 2pm on Saturday 10 October for a cultural event.

The Gardens will reopen to visitors from 2pm.

Please plan your visit accordingly and follow any directions from Booderee staff and signage on the day.

As the spring weather brings warmer days, you'll start to notice our local gari (snakes) becoming more active across Booderee. 🐍🌿

A variety of snake species call the park home, including the striking Malya (Diamond python). Gari (snakes) play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, so if you're out exploring, remember to stay aware of your surroundings and give any snakes you encounter plenty of space.

Fourteen little penguins received their first H5 bird flu vaccination as part of ongoing efforts to help wildlife at Booderee National Park.

The 14 penguins, from 9 nests on Bowen Island, were vaccinated following a thorough health assessment. Each bird was weighed, measured, health scored and microchipped, providing valuable baseline information to help monitor their health into the future. The penguins will receive their second vaccination in 3-4 weeks.

The location of each nest was also recorded, with motion-sensor cameras installed to monitor the penguins following their vaccinations.

Importantly, no signs of H5 bird flu were detected in the penguins during the visit.

This work, led by the New South Wales government with support from Parks Australia, Taronga Zoo Sydney Conservation Society and veterinary experts builds on ongoing H5 bird flu preparedness and response activities at Booderee National Park.

🚧 Exciting improvements are underway at the Booderee Botanic Gardens!

We're renewing and upgrading boardwalks, pathways and walkways throughout the rainforest section of the gardens to improve accessibility, safety and the visitor experience.

Key upgrades include:

🌿 A new accessible loop with around 150 metres of sealed pathways and boardwalks
♿ New and extended viewing decks and rest areas to improve wheelchair and mobility access
🌉 New hardwood and corrosion resistant pedestrian bridges designed to improve accessibility
🛤️ Upgraded pathways throughout the gardens, with improved gradients and surfaces
🌳 Raised boardwalk sections to protect tree roots and reduce trip hazards
🪨 New sandstone retaining walls replacing ageing timber structures

The project is also focused on sustainability, with materials being reused wherever possible, including existing decking, pathway materials and soil for future garden use.

We appreciate your patience while these important works are completed and look forward to welcoming visitors to an even more accessible and enjoyable Botanic Gardens experience.
