The Upholstery Workroom is a professional workroom/studio, set in the beautiful valley of Jamberoo on the NSW south coast, about a 2.5hr drive from Sydney. We specialise in small, very friendly, group workshops in upholstery and lampshade-making - and cater to all levels from beginner to advanced. We have a growing range of workshops which offer a choice of making your own new furniture, or shade,

or making-over your existing item. All our workshops are run in a Covid safe environment, are focussed on providing a productive as well as fun time with us - and all include freshly home-made yummies for morning or afternoon tea.

Some fabrics sit in the stash because you just can’t quite bring yourself to cut into them.
This beautiful pink cherry-blossom print on snowy white, heavy furnishing linen is one of those. It’s by Scottish fabric house Bluebellgray, and I’ve had it since my upholstery days — waiting for the right project.

Finally, I found it.

I’ve been developing these tall floor lamps and wanted to solve one particular problem: how to get beautiful, even light through the whole height of the lamp.
My solution was to have special frames made with not one, but TWO light fittings.

I use rechargeable LED bulbs, so the finished lamps need no power point and no power cord. You can put one wherever you want it, switch it on with the remote — and move it again whenever the mood takes you.

I’ll have just 2 of these Cherry Blossom cordless floor lamps with me at Handmade Canberra. They come complete with the fittings and rechargeable bulbs, and can also be ordered in a choice of fabrics.

The making of one of the Larapinta Lampshade Collection shades…

These are a little different to my standard shades — and quite a bit more nerve-racking to make!

The eco-art silk is extremely fragile and tricky to laminate onto the adhesive PVC lining. Once the fabric touches the adhesive, there’s very little room for error. If it sticks in the wrong place, it’s pretty much impossible to lift again without damaging the silk.

And this fabric is far too special to risk. Created by Mparntwe artist Deborah Clarke, it uses Central Australian flora to create the natural colour and markings, with Deb’s own artwork added afterwards — making every piece completely unique.

So, after a little trial and error, this is the method I’ve developed to keep the silk under control, laminate it slowly and carefully, and hopefully avoid any disasters!

And the final pic shows the finished pair — made from the same piece of Deb’s silk, but each with its own unique patterning. They’ll be coming with me to Handmade Canberra, 19–20 September, where the Larapinta Lampshade Collection will be available exclusively.

This collection is a dream come true for me — turning the stunning natural-fibre artworks of Central Australian multimedia artist Deborah Clarke into lampshades.

I’ve walked the Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges many times, and one of the things I love most about that country is its extraordinary light, especially in the early mornings and evenings. It transforms the red rock, desert flora, brilliant blue skies and flashes of colourful birdlife.

That sense of light and landscape is what I see in Deb’s work. She eco-dyes natural fibres with local plants, then adds her own drawn lines and details. In making them into lampshades, I wanted to capture a little of that magic — to bring the light, colour and spirit of Larapinta into your home.

I’ve used a glass-clear lining so the reverse of the fabric can be seen inside the shade — an unusual feature only possible with special fabrics like these. The resulting translucence is quite extraordinary, with the colours and markings changing again when the lamp is lit.

These shades can only ever be made in very small batches. Each piece of Deb’s fabric produces just two shades, and no two are ever the same.

I’ll be bringing the collection to Handmade Canberra, 19–20 September — where it will be available exclusively and, if all goes to plan, Deb herself will be joining me on the stall on Sunday morning, all the way from Alice Springs.

After dreaming about this collection for so long, it will be very special for the two of us to share it together for the first time. If you’re able to make it, please come and say hello, meet Deb and see the shades for yourself — we’d love to share the story behind them with you.

I was lucky enough to be invited to run a workshop recently at the stunning Osborne House in Bundanoon, as part of a trade retreat run by Electrolux Australia - I know - what have lampshades got to do with electrical appliances? Watch the beautiful video to find out (I appear about half way 😊)

Meet the Laggan Lamp -
‘Bridgerton meets Aussie Squattocracy’

I recently added this stunning antique lamp to my collection, and after replacing its fly-spotted old shade with this much more appropriate one, and getting the electrics tested and tagged, it is now set for its next chapter in a new home.

It’s on display at Handmade Canberra market today (Sunday 14th June) and available for purchase. If the fancy-pants gold-tasselled shade is a too OTT for you, there’s also a more subdued version in a pale blue check, and no tassels in sight.

Why the ref to squattocracy?
Well this lamp was part of an estate sale on a grand old property at Laggan NSW. I would dearly love to see the other furnishings in the homestead, and I hope you’ll forgive my use of AI to help me imagine how it might have looked in its last home.

The doors open at EPIC Canberra at 10am.
I don’t think I’ll be taking this one home with me.

I’m back at this terrific market with a whole batch of new shades and for the first time, a range of stunning vintage lamps I’ve been collecting - all tested and tagged (some with new cloth covered cables). These are true originals and I’ve had a lot of fun making great shades to suit.
Come and see me if you can - on the southern end of the Burrawang Pavilion.
In addition to a huge choice of makers’ art and craft from around Australia, there’s fabulous food and drink in the adjacent pavilion.
