Don't Bypass Hinchinbrook The "Don't Bypass Hinchinbrook" campaign is a community driven campaign, supported by local shop owners, farmers and concerned community members.

The Queensland Government has proposed a $5 billion bypass of the Ingham CBD and Hinchinbrook Shire. This proposed bypass will:
1 - Cripple the Ingham CBD, where shop owners are reliant on revenue generated by general traffic passing through town;
2 - Make it harder for potential tourists to visit key areas of our shire, like Lucinda, Forrest Beach and Halifax;
3 - Remove a large area of high-qual

ity farm land from production;
4 - Increase flood risk and intensity for nearby farmers and the Ingham township; and
5 - Destroy the Tyto wetlands, throwing millions of rate-payers investment away. There are alternative solutions to moving heavy traffic out of town, without destroying the Ingham CBD and our shire.

Hinchinbrook Shire Council candidate Jonathan Pavetto says the upcoming by-election is a referendum on the proposed bypass of the Hinchinbrook Shire.

And he vowed to fight the $2 billion proposal every step of the way.

Mr Pavetto said it was the number one issue he would take to council for resolution “to prevent the potentially catastrophic effects it will have on the local business community."

The first public comment from the Mayor and the Hinchinbrook Shire Council about the proposed bypass in well over a full year.

In the interests of transparency and accountability to local rate-payers, it's time for the Council to provide detailed reporting on its negotiations with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (i.e. objectives, proposals and agreed outcomes) on this critical issue.

Mr Pavetto, who sits on the Hinchinbrook Chamber of
Commerce and leads the Lucinda Progress Association, said he briefed [Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport] Michael McCormack on the risk of the proposed western bypass route, which would divert traffic away from the Ingham central business district and the coast.

“Which is exactly the opposite of what we are trying to do in the community, we are trying to get more people to come to the CBD and visit the coastal areas.”

"I would much rather see you be able to come in and out of Ingham on a flood-proof road than actually have a bypass," he said.

He suggested that the only type of bypass he would support would be a heavy vehicle bypass.

"I would want to make sure if anything is done it's not going to affect the commerce of Ingham itself," he said.

Margaret Bell for Hinchinbrook - Pauline Hanson's One Nation says we need to be consulted on the proposed bypass. Couldn't agree more!

Ms Bell also said that it was “disconcerting” how the Ingham-Cardwell Ranges bypass would affect local businesses.

She was also concerned about the flood mitigation associated with, and the devaluing of properties affected by, the project.

“There must be alternative options and much more consultation is necessary with all, including local residents, before anything is finalised,” she said.

Peter Raffles, Independent candidate for Hinchinbrook understands the impact of the proposed bypass. Thanks, Peter!

Peter Raffles said the Ingham to Cardwell Ranges bypass would have an adverse effect on local economies, with connections lost to other areas in the region including Lucinda.

“Talking broadly about regional economies, and regional economies across Australia have been hit hard; extremely hard,” he said

“So, if you start bypassing regional communities, you’re starting to take away part of their economy,” he said.

On the Ingham bypass, Nick Dametto said the bypass would hurt Hinchinbrook residents with the only benefit for trucking companies.

"Bypasses, i believe, kill small towns," he said.

"In my opinion, I don't think a bypass would be good for the residents of Ingham... it would affect small businesses."

"All you have to do is look up and down the streets of Ingham; there's 20-25 shop faces that are empty."
