What did Earth’s atmosphere look like thousands to millions of years ago? 🤔

Air bubbles trapped in Antarctic ice cores hold the answer.

Scientists from our Million Year Ice Core project are using cutting-edge techniques to extract greenhouse gases trapped in these ancient air bubbles. 🫧

The work will help us understand past climate, put today’s changes into perspective, and provide information to better predict future climate.

Now that’s what we call a gas! 😉

Is there anybody out there? 🌋

If there is, our Autonomous Remote Environment Monitoring System — or ARTEMIS — could be the first to know.

This eery image of Big Ben, an active volcano on Heard Island, was captured by an ARTEMIS unit installed during an Australian Antarctic Program voyage to the island earlier this year.

ARTEMIS sends real-time weather data and imagery back to Australia, supporting ongoing research and environmental monitoring in this remote Australian territory.

A dance floor like nowhere else on Earth!

Our expeditioners at Casey Station aren’t letting the longer nights dampen the mood, holding one of the world’s coolest dance parties.

As the darkness settles in, a whole new world is opening up at Mawson research station ❄️

The sea ice has now thickened enough for expeditioners to drive on, unlocking access to areas that were out of reach just weeks ago.

After completing specialised sea ice travel training, teams can journey further afield — visiting remote huts and collecting valuable sea ice data.

This work plays a vital role in helping scientists better understand the impacts of climate change.

Fitting recognition for service in Australia’s Antarctic Program.

This week Dr Jan Wallace received her 2025 Australian Antarctic Medal from the Governor-General, in a ceremony at Government House.

Dr Wallace has served across all Australian Antarctic stations, Macquarie Island, and aboard key Antarctic vessels since 2011, providing medical care in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

🌿 Botanical art from the sub-Antarctic

Antarctic Arts Fellow Maura Chamberlain presents an exhibition of botanical illustrations featuring the unique plants of Macquarie Island.

📍 Waterside Pavilion, Argyle Street, Hobart
📅 9–15 May
⏰ 10am–4pm

Maura travelled to sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island in 2024 as an Australian Antarctic Arts Fellow, aboard RSV Nuyina. Working in the field, she studied the island’s flora up close — informing detailed drawings of species found nowhere else on Earth.

The works will also feature in a new book published by , with proceeds supporting conservation on the island.

Get along to see Maura’s stunning work and support conservation efforts for World Heritage listed Macquarie Island.

The Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship is part of the Australian Antarctic Program and is supported by the Australian Antarctic Division (DCCEEW).

We’ve been hard at work upgrading expeditioner accommodation at Macquarie Island research station as part of the Macquarie Island Station Project.🔨

The Southern Aurora Donga (or ‘SAD’), built in the late 1950s, was well overdue for a refresh. 🛏️

Thanks to the skill and dedication of our tradespeople, the bedrooms and amenities have been brightened, and the building reclad—giving SAD a whole new look and feel. 🏠

Around 24 people call the station home over winter, supporting scientific monitoring, maintaining vital infrastructure, and looking after the health and wellbeing of the team. 🔬

These upgrades will help ensure they have a more comfortable place to live and work in one of the world’s most remote environments.🌏

Welcome home RSV Nuyina, passengers and crew. 👋

After a successful Macquarie Island resupply, homecomers were treated to a spectacular sunrise over the River Derwent this morning.🌅

A fitting end to another successful season of science and logistics for the Australian Antarctic Program.👏

🐧 We're all in a flap ahead of World Penguin Day tomorrow!

Did you know Australia runs a network of automatic penguin monitoring cameras along the East Antarctic coast?

📸 More than 40 cameras capture 10 photos every day of 30–40 penguin nests per camera.

The images are stored on memory cards, which scientists collect later to see how the breeding season unfolded — without disturbing the penguins. 🐧

A clever way to keep an eye on Antarctica’s iconic residents while letting them do their thing. 💙❄️
