On the weekend we went out and replaced the wave buoy off the south east corner of Dunk Island as the battery on the existing one had died.

We had installed the original wave buoy for the Government Hydraulcs Laboratory in Brisbane who are collecting wind and wave data for research, particularly in relation to cyclones.

They are generously making this data available to the local marine community.

Good Friday was indeed a good day for Tully Coast Guard as our new vessel had its first official outing, and it was an interesting one.
We were tasked by the Cairns Water Police to board an unmanned drifting vessel, in this case a large steel trawler, and attempt to improve the anchoring by letting out more chain.

It was a very rough trip down to the Cardwell but the new vessel did exceptionally well and the double chine design worked like a shock absorber.

Fortunately, the wind dropped once we arrived which made it safe enough for Don and Dan to board the vessel and see what they could do. They were able to release the second anchor and some chain which should help reduce the drifting.

As soon as our two intrepid crew members got back on the boat the wind picked up leading to another fun trip back to the base.

We took photos and sent them to the Cairns Water Police who forwarded them on to Maritime Safety Queensland who are responsible for dealing with drifting unmanned vessels.

All in all, a very interesting first outing for TU21 and the crew.

The Tully Coast Guard extends a big thank you to Reeds Beta Tully for their generous donation of $150 towards the new freezer for the base. Thanks Raymond for great service with a smile. Our new freezer is up and running. The familiar background is the Mary Liddle, now sharing the shed with the new boat, but she is still the active rescue boat.

The Tully Coast Guard extends a big thank you to Teitzel's Tully IGA for their generous donation of $600 from their Xmas fund. This is going towards the many transition costs as we change over to the new boat. There is a lot of training and setup before the new boat is out of the shed, and hard at work giving us a view behind doing what it was built for...

After numerous hurdles we are pleased to announce that our brand new vessel hit the water this morning as we started our first round of on-water training.

The vessel is in the colours of Marine Rescue Queensland and over the next few months we will be transitioning from the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard to Marine Rescue Queensland.

It is lsightly longer than our previous vessel at 9.1m and has twin yamaha 300Hp outboards.

Just a quick one today showing the difference in seating.

The new vessel has top class suspension seating for the skipper and navigator station in constrast to the simpler seating on the Mary Liddle. Crew members 3 and 4 have the simpler bench cushions, but crewman 3 has conrol over the new fridge in lieue of the esky we curently use.

And before the questions are asked, NO bait and NO beer allowed in the fridge.

This is the first of our new versus old comparison and we are starting with the ๐‘ต๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’‚๐’•๐’๐’“ ๐‘บ๐’•๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ as this is one of the most signifcant changes.

You will see in the photo below that the ๐‘ต๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’‚๐’•๐’๐’“ ๐‘บ๐’•๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ has a lot more instrumentation which is numbered as follows:

1 Furuno FLIR thermal imaging camera
2 Furuno 16" multi-funtion display (MFD)
3 Windsreen wiper and washer (these actually work well)
4 Remote control for the searchlight
5 IPAD containing all relevant documentation and reporting
6 Radio Detector (can identify and locate weak radio signals)
7 Switches (there are an awful lot more of these)
8 Satellite phone
9 Level of the freshwater tank

In compasion, on the Mary Liddle the ๐‘ต๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’‚๐’•๐’๐’“ station has the radio, Raymarine radar and a small joystick for the searchlight.

The Furuno MFD is perhaps the brains of the vessel as it can display information from other instruments. For example, the screen can be split into 4 showing the chart plotter, radar, thermal imaging camera and engine data. We are slowly working our way through the 420 page manual to comprehend its full capability.

Tully Coast Guard is very pleased to announce that our new vessel has finally arrived at our base and will soon replace the 25 year old Mary Liddle on the water.

The new vessesl is 9.1m and has 2 x 300HP Yamahas and is fitted with the best in modern technology and has that new vessel smell.

The next steps are the training and relevant procedures so it should enter operation mid-March.

TU21 (that's the call sign) will soon be coming to a boat ramp near you so you can have a closer look. We hope that you will that impressed that you will come and join our team.

The vessel is white and not yellow as previous coast guard vessels and this reflects our impending move to Marine Rescue Queensland who provided the vessel but that is a story for another post.
