Changing temperatures and pressure differences across Australia can create stronger, more variable winds. Check multiple weather sources to build a clearer picture of conditions on the water.

Mariners are advised that jetty fender replacement works will be undertaken at the Burgess Cove Boat Ramp and the Sisters Beach Boat Ramp from Tuesday, 15 September to Friday, 18 September 2026 between 0700 and 1600 hours daily.

Both boat ramps will remain open to the public during the works.

Mariners should navigate with caution in the area.

⛴ Cruising from Hobart to New Norfolk ⛴

The new Bridgewater Bridge is now open, improving road connections across the River Derwent. For boaters heading between Hobart and New Norfolk, it's important to understand what has changed on the water.

The new bridge provides a fixed navigation opening, allowing vessels to pass underneath without waiting for bridge openings.

If you're cruising upstream to New Norfolk or heading back towards Hobart, make sure you understand the bridge clearance and navigation requirements before you leave.

Before making the trip:

☑ Check your vessel's draft to ensure you can safely clear the bridge.
☑ Plan your passage and be aware of tides, river conditions and weather.
☑ Keep a lookout and maintain a safe speed, particularly in narrower sections of the river and familiarise yourself with the designated 5-knot area upstream of Sorell Creek.
☑ Be mindful of other river users, including paddlers, rowers and commercial vessels.

🛟Boaters – it’s time to check your moorings

Spring has arrived in Tasmania. The weather is warming, making boaters want to get out on the water. But this season also brings windy weather.

This mooring in this image looks good from the surface, but you don’t know its true condition until you inspect the underwater components.

💨Strong Spring winds can place extra strain on mooring lines, chains and attachment points.

Boaters:

⛓Inspect ropes, chains, shackles and attachment points for signs of wear, corrosion or damage.

🪢Make sure knots, connections and securing points are in good condition.

🔎Inspect your mooring before and after periods of windy weather.

Is your EPIRB registered?

If your EPIRB is activated in an emergency, registration can help rescuers respond faster.

Register your EPIRB with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as soon as you purchase it. Registration is free and may be required by law.

A registered beacon provides AMSA with important information that can assist search and rescue efforts, including your emergency contact details. Without registration, valuable time may be lost identifying and responding to your distress signal.

Before you head out:

Check your EPIRB is registered
Make sure your contact and emergency contact details are up to date.

If you buy or sell a second-hand beacon, make sure the registration details are updated

You can check or update your beacon registration online through AMSA:

M293-26 Gordon Jetty – Temporary Closure

Mariners are advised that Gordon Jetty will be closed to public access from Monday, 17 August 2026, to allow for the removal of the existing jetty and construction of a new jetty.

Mariners are requested to keep clear of the works area and navigate with caution.

A further notice will be issued once the works are complete and the jetty has reopened to the public.

M284-26 is cancelled.

Mariners are advised that Tods Corner Boat Ramp is currently closed and will remain closed until Monday, 24 August 2026.

The closure is required to allow contractors to install a 20-metre extension to the existing concrete boat ramp.

Mariners are requested to keep clear of the works area and use an alternative launching facility while the closure remains in place.

MAST will provide an update on this project when appropriate, and we thank the community for their patience.

M286-26 River Derwent, Battery Point Jetty – Temporary Closure

Mariners are advised that Battery Point Jetty will be closed from 17:00 hours on Wednesday, 19 August 2026 until Monday, 24 August 2026 to allow essential concrete repair works to be undertaken.

To ensure the safety of the public and workers, the facility will remain fully closed for the duration of the works. There will be no access to the jetty by land or water at any time, including during the day and overnight.

We apologise for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation during these important maintenance works.
