Boating safety: Derelict vessels on Tasmania’s waterways

Vessel owners must maintain their boats to prevent them from becoming unsafe, derelict, or abandoned. Poorly maintained boats can also create hazards, harm the environment, and endanger others.

!What should owners do?!
🔎Regularly inspect and maintain their vessel even if it is not in frequent use.
🪢Make sure moored vessels are securely attached to the mooring and in good condition.
🔧Repair damage immediately to prevent further deterioration.
🛡If a vessel is not being used, arrange for appropriate storage.
⏰Dispose of vessels that are beyond repair, therefore no longer safe, appropriately.

NOTE: Owners risk enforcement action and additional costs if they let their vessel deteriorate or abandon it!

Closed – Pedestrian bridge at Gravelly Beach, West Tamar region, Northern Tasmania.

Please take the time to read the information the West Tamar Council have posted to ensure the safety of people in the area. The closure also applies to transiting under the structure.

As indicated, the Council will provide updates on public use when relevant.

UPDATE: STONY CREEK PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE - GRAVELLY BEACH

Engineers have undertaken an inspection of the pedestrian bridge at Stony Creek and advised Council that the structure must remain closed until a more comprehensive review is completed.

While the closure of the pedestrian bridge is obviously inconvenient, the safety of our community remains Council’s absolute priority.

Council officers are actively exploring all viable interim options to restore pedestrian connectivity while a long-term solution is identified.

Council is in discussions with bus operator Manion’s Coach Services to establish a temporary secondary bus stop on the southern side of Stony Creek. This will assist residents who are currently cut off from the primary stop on the northern side of the bridge.

Community members are reminded that despite the temporary vehicle speed reductions put in place on the adjacent road, under no circumstances should pedestrians use the vehicle bridge to walk across Stony Creek.

Council will continue to provide regular updates to the community as further updates becomes available.

A well-maintained boat is a safer boat.

Regular maintenance can help prevent breakdowns, protect passengers, avoid costly repairs and help to keep everyone safe.

Over winter, take the time to:

✅Inspect steering and controls.
✅Test navigation lights and electronics.
✅Ensure life jackets are maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
✅Check your safety gear, including flares, fire extinguishers, and EPIRBs are in date.
✅Inspect your trailer, tyres, and tie downs before travel.

M211-26 Craigbourne Dam – Temporary Closure
Mariners are advised that Craigbourne Dam will be temporarily closed until further notice.
Routine monitoring undertaken by Tasmanian Irrigation has identified the presence of blue-green algae in Craigbourne Dam.
Mariners are advised not to use the waterway until the closure has been lifted.

The MAST website’s facilities section lists marine facilities statewide and is a useful guide when boating in unfamiliar areas.

Boating safety tip – mooring audits and renewals

📑Mooring audits
Last week, MAST officers conducted mooring audits in Frederick Henry Bay and Norfolk Bay, Southern Tasmania.

MAST Officers regularly audit mooring fields across the state to monitor compliance and reduce the risk of moorings or moored boats becoming waterway hazards.

🔔Mooring renewals
If you are a mooring permit holder, keep a lookout for your mooring renewal notice; you may have already received it!

All mooring permits share a common expiry date of 30 June each year. To avoid your mooring becoming unregistered, make sure your renewal is completed before 30 June 2026.

Infrastructure update: Sisters Beach

What improvements have been made?

• Removal of the existing timber jetty that was end of life.
• Construction of a new stepped concrete jetty.
• The new jetty is accessible at the majority of tides.
• Bottom section of boat ramp had the concrete planks removed, and a new concrete ramp was installed.
• The new structure will provide easier access to boats from the jetty at lower tides.

Once again, MAST thanks the residents of Sisters Beach and boaters who use this facility for their patience.

M201-26 River Derwent, Macquarie Wharf Berth 6 – Demolition and Construction Works – Prohibited Area

Mariners are advised that demolition and construction work on the redevelopment of Macquarie Wharf Berth 6 will commence on Monday, 1 June 2026.

The works will involve the demolition of the existing berth and the construction of the new wharf structure. These works will be completed both on land and from the water by the construction barge Leanora.

A waterside prohibited area surrounding the construction site will commence at 0700 hours on Monday, 1 June 2026, and will remain in place until the construction work is completed and MAST issues a subsequent notice declaring the prohibited area cancelled. The prohibited area is within the waters bound by the following coordinates.

The prohibited area will be demarcated by 7 yellow-lit special marks. All vessels and persons are prohibited from navigating within the prohibited area, unless authorised by Hobart VTS.

Regulation 71 of the Marine and Safety (Pilotage and Navigation) Regulations 2017 provides for the declaration of a specified area to be a prohibited area for other vessels or persons.

Mariners are advised that the Old Beach Boat Ramp and Jetty will be temporarily closed by Brighton Council for general maintenance on Thursday, 4 June 2026, from 0700 to 1700 hours.

Mariners are requested to plan accordingly and use alternative facilities during this period.
