Last night we had a helicopter training session and were introduced to Tasmania's new rescue helicopters. Being able to work safely in and around helicopters is an essential skill for the team and it was great to see the new machines and familarise ourselves with them. Thanks to our colleagues at StarFlight Australia and Tasmania Police for having us and we look forward to working with you.

As winter sets in, police are urging residents and visitors to respect Tasmania’s potentially dangerous alpine weather conditions, including on kunanyi/Mount Wellington.

👮 The key message from Tasmania Police Search and Rescue to bushwalkers and day trippers is Plan, Prepare and Prevent.

🏔️ Be aware that it can take just a matter of minutes for the weather to turn treacherous in Tasmania’s alpine and wilderness areas.

🌨️❄️ A day that might start out quite mild can turn to blizzard-like conditions with strong wind, sleet and snow. And in those conditions, the exposure can turn deadly.

🚓🚑 It is vital police and emergency services have clear access to mountain roads and tracks.

➡️ Our priority is getting quickly and safely to those people who need our help. Vehicles parked illegally and obstructing the road and access areas add time, and complexity, to the emergency response.

Over the past two days Martin, our Deputy Unit Manager, has been delivering a Land Search training course with support from senior members of the Southern Search and Rescue (SAR) Team. The course is an introduction to search techniques and is vital to prepare SES members so they can assist with searches. A few of the SAR team also took up the opportunity to brush up on a few basics.

Last night the team slept out to practice our shelter-making skills. While we carry tents on multi-day searches, we often find that we need a quick kip on extended day or night searches. A tarp and a bivvy bag can be a great flexible option.

A Longford man missing in rugged bushland in the state’s north for more than three days has been found alive.

32-year-old Corey Chugg, who went missing in bushland at Mt Barrow near Nunamara on Sunday night, was located a short time ago by search and rescue teams.

Mr Chugg was found at the bottom of a steep incline, on the edge of the known search area.

He was able to talk with rescue personnel and, after undergoing assessment by medical specialists, has been transferred to hospital for further treatment.

The full extent of his physical condition and any injuries is not known at this time.

Mr Chugg's family has been advised that he has been found alive.

Planning a Tassie walk this summer?

Whether it’s a short stroll or a multi-day hike, different walks require different equipment, but being prepared is essential to any trip.

Day walk must haves:

✅ Light day pack
✅ Weatherproof jacket
✅ Hat & sunglasses
✅ Hiking boots (break them in first!)
✅ Gaiters
✅ SPF50+ sunscreen
✅ Water (one litre per person per three hours)
✅ High-energy snacks
✅ First aid kit
✅ Emergency space blanket
✅ Mobile phone (signal may drop)
✅ Rubbish bag (leave no trace)

Heading into alpine areas or overnight hikes? You’ll need extra gear.

A search is underway near Cockle Creek for an elderly woman who went missing during a walk.

The woman, in her 70s, was with family members when she became separated and wandered from the track.

Police were alerted just before 5.30pm.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a walking party of SES volunteers have been dispatched to the area.
