As His Majesty the King’s representative in Tasmania, the Governor has attended and presided over several Royal occasions during her term.

In 2022, she led commemorations in Tasmania following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, including holding a service at Government House.

The Governor attended His Majesty the King’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey in May 2023, along with other Australian State Governors and the Governor-General.

It is tradition that each State Governor has an audience with the monarch during their term, and following the Coronation the Governor and Professor Chalmers met His Majesty at Buckingham Palace.

The Governor also met His Majesty and Queen Camilla during their visit to Australia in 2024, travelling to Canberra with other State Governors for a reception hosted by the Prime Minister.

During the Governor’s term, she has welcomed many Tasmanians to the Government House ballroom for receptions to mark special occasions of significance.

Over the past five years, thousands of guests have attended more than 230 evening receptions, where they have had the opportunity to talk to the Governor, visit the State Rooms and enjoy refreshments prepared by the Government House Kitchen Team.

This week the Governor hosted her final reception, to mark His Majesty King Charles III’s Birthday in Tasmania.

While His Majesty celebrates his actual birthday on 14 November, each year the United Kingdom and many Australian States mark his official birthday in June.

Speaking at the event, the Governor highlighted His Majesty’s commitment to the welfare of people and the planet, and then invited guests to join her in a toast.

During the evening, guests enjoyed music from the Australian Army Band Tasmania.

As Patron of the Australian Institute for International Affairs’ Tasmanian Branch, the Governor was yesterday evening pleased to host the organisation’s annual lecture at Government House.

The Institute actively promotes understanding of and interest in international affairs across fields ranging from politics and economics to international law.

Vice-Regal patronage of the Institute in Tasmania dates back to the 1980s and then Governor, former diplomat Sir James Plimsoll.

The 2026 lecture, titled “A Changing Strategic World: Australia and the Contested Maritime Domain”, was delivered by Jennifer Parker, Expert Associate at the Australian National University’s National Security College, and Adjunct Fellow in naval studies at the University of New South Wales.

During her term, the Governor has welcomed many Tasmanian community groups who are celebrating significant events or important milestones to Government House to enjoy morning or afternoon tea.

From netball and garden clubs to historical societies and charities, members of community groups from across the State have joined the Governor for refreshments and Professor Chalmers for a guided tour of the State Rooms.

Yesterday, as Patron of A Fairer World, the Governor was delighted to host a morning tea to mark the organisation’s 40th anniversary.

Speaking to guests, the Governor congratulated staff and volunteers on their work towards creating a fairer, kinder and more inclusive world through Hobart Human Library programs in schools and workplaces.

The Governor also thanked the ‘human books’ who make up the library for sharing their stories, and wished A Fairer World well as it continues to amplify the voices of inclusion and belonging.

Last week members of Tasmania’s State Emergency Service visited Government House for a special afternoon tea to celebrate the organisation’s 50th anniversary.

The Tasmania SES was established in 1976, bringing together volunteers from across the State under a single, coordinated framework for disaster response.

Today, the SES comprises more than 770 volunteers across 38 units, from Smithton in the north-west to Huonville in the south, and from the East Coast to the Central Highlands.

Over the past 50 years, SES volunteers have responded to countless incidents, often in challenging and hazardous conditions, saving lives and helping Tasmanians recover from some of the State’s most difficult events.

On behalf of the Governor, Official Secretary David Hughes acknowledged volunteers past and present, as well as the staff who support them, and thanked the SES for its half century of service.

A key part of the Governor’s ceremonial role has been representing the people of Tasmania at important commemorations throughout her term, including Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.

Yesterday she attended a ceremony to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, which took place on the island during World War II and involved Greek and other Allied forces.

The Governor laid a wreath at a service at the Hobart Cenotaph and then gave an address at a reception hosted by the Cretan Association of Tasmania at Hellenic House.

Speaking to those in attendance, she highlighted Tasmanian soldiers involved in the Crete campaign, and the connections between Crete and Tasmania which continued to grow in the post-war period.

The Governor honoured the memory of all those who lost their lives and noted that the Greek-Australian bond forged during the battle still resonates today.

As the Governor approaches the end of her term, yesterday evening the Premier, the Honourable Jeremy Rockliff MP, hosted a reception to say farewell.

The event provided an opportunity to recognise the Governor for her service to Tasmania and Professor Chalmers for his support to her over the past five years.

In attendance were Members of Parliament, department representatives and Executive Council staff who have worked with the Governor in her important constitutional role.

Speaking to those gathered, the Governor discussed highlights from her term and said it had been a great honour to serve the Tasmanian community as the State’s 29th Governor.

As Patron of the Tasmanian Refugee Legal Service (TRLS), the Governor was yesterday pleased to visit the not-for-profit organisation’s Hobart office to meet with staff.

TRLS provides migration-related legal services to refugees, migrants, asylum seekers and other humanitarian entrants in the Tasmanian community.

Due to their circumstances, these clients may otherwise be unable to access legal assistance that is free, or available in Tasmania.

Operating since 2013, TRLS is the only dedicated refugee, migrant, asylum seeker and humanitarian entrant legal service in Tasmania.

The Governor and Professor Chalmers spent time with the TRLS team, finding out about the organisation’s work and the challenges faced by the refugee community.

In her community engagement role, the Governor is proud to serve as Patron of more than 130 organisations, including the Australian Red Cross - Tasmania.

Professor Chalmers also serves as Joint Patron of several organisations, and as the Vice-Patron of the Australian Red Cross Tasmanian Division.

As Patron and Vice-Patron, yesterday they were delighted to welcome Australian Red Cross volunteers to Government House for a special afternoon tea and awards ceremony to mark National Volunteer Week.

Speaking to guests, the Governor highlighted that nearly 700 of the more than 10,000 Australian Red Cross volunteers are in Tasmania – meaning the State has nearly 7 per cent of the organisation’s national volunteer base, even though Tasmania has only about 2 per cent of Australia’s population.

The Governor thanked all volunteers for their work on behalf of our community and presented awards to recognise dedicated volunteers for their service.
