Found Words

Found Words Words about words and bookmarks for lovers of language; columns of words are chosen and preserved from vintage dictionaries found in my hometown of Hobart.

Found Words are bookmarks for word lovers. My fascination with word usage combined with a broken dictionary prompted the framing of these portable random word-fixes in bookmark form. Each word column is handpicked and pickled from old dictionaries found in Hobart, Tasmania. Showcased sections are chosen for their nailing of history, quirk, fun, imagination, or beauty. Found Words are an invitation to savour lone vocables, to explore, ponder and be inspired by their individual form and flavour.

This word of the week is from the US but like all the other problems they have right now, Australia is just looking in a mirror that magnifies the same problems that exist here on our own scale.

We don’t call this “looting” because it is being done quietly in nice marbled office buildings in Washington and New York.We don’t call this “looting” because the looters wear designer suits and are very polite as they eagerly steal everything not nailed down to the floor

I remember reading about the removal (of these nature words) with a sinking heart. The metaphor was unmissable.

This morning Susan Butler spoke to Adam Spencer about ghost words in dictionaries, that is, words which have crept in by mistake. The example was given of dord which appeared in Webster's New International Dictionary (second edition). The chemistry editor had written an entry for D or d, as a contra...
