Born and bred in Hobart, Meg has begun her journey as one of Tasmania’s newest paramedics this week.
Meg hadn’t always considered paramedicine as a career path. That changed when a family member became unwell and an ambulance was called. Witnessing the crew in action during that moment left a lasting impression and ultimately inspired her to pursue a career helping others in their most critical moments.
“I remember it being a really stressful situation, but the way the paramedics made us feel in that moment really stayed with me,” Meg said. “They were calm, reassuring, and made us feel like everything was going to be okay.”
Meg also brings valuable experience from her four years working in administration within the Trauma Unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
“I’ve already had some exposure to how things operate within the hospital, which I hope will come in handy out on the road,” she said.
After completing an intensive six-week induction, Meg says the transition into the role is starting to feel very real.
“There are definitely a few nerves, but the mentors and educators have been really supportive,” she said. “I’m looking forward to putting it all together.”
Welcome to the team, Meg - we’re excited to have you on board 👏

Welcome to the road, our newest paramedics!

Fifteen graduate paramedics are officially hitting the road this week, ready to deliver life-saving care across Tasmania.

Over the past six weeks, the graduates have been undertaking their induction program which is a structured program to support their transition into frontline practice. It introduces them to the organisation’s clinical standards, operational procedures, and professional expectations. Across the induction period, the graduates participated in targeted learning sessions and scenario-based training designed to strengthen clinical reasoning, communication, and teamwork.

Last week, a simulation took place at Seven Mile Beach, where each graduate led a beachside resuscitation scenario under the guidance of our experienced educators, and clinical support officers and support from Surf Life Saving volunteers.

Twelve of our fifteen new recruits have completed their studies at the University of Tasmania, with a further three relocating from interstate to join the service. Together, they bring fresh skills, passion, and dedication to communities right across the state.

Congratulations to our newest paramedics, we’re proud to have you on the team.

This National Volunteer Week, Ambulance Tasmania is proud to celebrate and thank our amazing GoodSAM responders – true everyday heroes in our community.
When someone in our community suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, every second counts. Our GoodSAM community responders step up without hesitation – providing hands-only CPR and applying an AED in those critical first moments before ambulance crews arrive. Their actions are helping save lives and strengthening the chain of survival across Tasmania.
Their compassion, courage, and willingness to help strangers in their time of greatest need truly reflects the best of our community.
Thank you for making a difference👏

🚑 National Volunteer Week 2026 🚑

This National Volunteer Week, we proudly recognise and thank our incredible Volunteer Ambulance Officers across Tasmania.
Day and night, in communities large and small, our volunteers stand ready to respond – providing vital care, reassurance and support when it’s needed most.
Their dedication, compassion and professionalism make a meaningful difference every single day.
Throughout the week, our leadership team will be out across the state connecting with and celebrating our volunteers in their local communities – a small way to say thank you in person.
To each and every one of our volunteers: thank you. We are truly grateful for all that you do and the impact you have across Tasmania.

This week the Ambulance Tasmania team kicked off their Emergency Services Blood Challenge – encouraging our paramedics, volunteers, operational and administration staff to roll up their sleeves and donate from 1 May to 31 July.

1 in 3 Australians will need blood in their lifetime, and 1 donation has the power to save 3 lives!

We’re calling on eligible Tasmanians to come together and make a difference by donating blood.

Violence towards ambulance staff is never acceptable.
We stand with our Ambulance Victoria colleagues, and everyone impacted by the assault of a paramedic while on duty yesterday.
Paramedics deliver critical, lifesaving care to the community and deserve to feel safe at work and return home to their loved ones after every shift.
We extend our best wishes to those involved and hope for a full and speedy recovery.

Our Intensive Care Paramedic (ICP) trainees were recently put to the test during a realistic simulation at Ninja Stadium.

The exercise was held during week one of the nine month ICP training program and focused on the leadership challenges associated with managing a critically unwell patient in a challenging environment.

Inspired by a real cardiac arrest incident at the MCG, the scenario saw trainees respond to an upper deck collapse, take over CPR from a security guard, run a complex resuscitation and safely lead the patient’s extrication.

With eight paramedics from across the state starting on road ICP duties this week, exercises like this help build the leadership, teamwork and decision making needed for life critical emergencies.

A great example of realistic training helping prepare paramedics for the moments that matter most.

This week marked the start of Ambulance Tasmania and StarFlight Australia's First Minutes Matter workshops, delivering life-saving skills to Tasmanians that can make all the difference before help arrives.

Developed by StarFlight Australia emergency and aeromedical specialists, the First Minutes Matter program equips participants with practical, confidence building skills for the critical first minutes of an emergency.

The workshops focus on how to administer effective CPR and use Automated External Defibrillator’s (AED’s), to support GoodSAM responders.

16 workshops are being held across Tasmania, from Castle Forbes Bay in the south to Burnie in the north west.

Ambulance Tasmania Acting Executive Director of Clinical Services Andrew Howard said programs like this strengthen the early links in the chain of survival, particularly in rural and regional communities.

“Having members of the public who know what to do in the event of a cardiac arrest can make a real difference in those early minutes before professional help arrives,” Mr Howard said.

Westpac’s sponsorship of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has been extended for a further two years.

Westpac has supported emergency helicopter services in Tasmania for more than 25 years, with sponsorship funds helping to make the service world-class.

Westpac’s ongoing partnership helps to provide things like specialist rescue equipment, personal protective equipment for aircrew, and advanced training opportunities.

The new flight helmets (as pictured) being introduced to crews are a great example of the valuable support. The helmets will meaningly improve safety, functionality, and better overall performance for crews operating in challenging environments.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service is used to treat and transport critically unwell or injured patients from accident scenes, transfer patients between health facilities, and support search and rescue operations across the state.

The rescue service is operated by both Ambulance Tasmania and Tasmania Police, with StarFlight Australia joining the team as aviation operator earlier this year.

Thank you to Westpac for your ongoing support of this life-saving service.
