HCM offers assistance to those who need it most in the Southern Tasmanian community by providing emotional, physical and financial support and guidance. Most children are carrying so much fear when they first arrive at DIY Dads.

And they have every reason to.

Because they only come to us when their world has been turned upside down.

These children have been living in so much uncertainty. Uncertainty about where they will sleep tonight, when they will next eat and if they will be able to stay with their dad.

DIY Dads is one of the only places in Australia that dads and children separated by homelessness and trauma can turn to.

With 8 self-contained units, a playground for the kids and BBQ for the dads, the first thing that DIY Dads provides is shelter and security for the children who arrive here.

These children often arrive with nothing but the clothes on their back, dazed from not having a permanent place to call home.

Putting these simple securities in place is the first step of their healing journey.

This winter, you can help keep that door open for families who have nowhere else to turn.

Please donate to Hobart City Mission’s Winter Appeal today and support programs like DIY Dads continue providing safe shelter, stability and support for families when they need it most.

The Howrah Community Centre's 11th Winter Appeal has once again shown the incredible power of community 🤝

Thanks to the generosity of local eastern shore residents, an enormous amount has been donated to help support Tasmanians who are doing it tough this winter 🧥

At a time when the cost of living continues to place pressure on so many, these donations will provide warmth and comfort to people who need it most this winter.

A special thank you goes to Amanda, whose passion, commitment and tireless work have been the driving force behind this incredible display of community 🌟

Amanda’s and her team of volunteers dedication has helped bring people together year after year to make a real difference in the lives of others

Every donation represents a simple act of kindness that will have a lasting impact. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who showed up with kindness for our community, thank you. 🙏

A safe place to stay can change everything.

"*Mary came to Mountain View from our Safe Space program.

She was scared and isolated from her friends, her family, and her community.

She was experiencing medical episodes that required emergency services to attend on an almost daily basis.

Over the past year we have been able to watch Mary transform into a new version of herself. She's not only more confident, but she's a leader of the resident community.

Someone that looks after others and has the ability to influence them positively through her own experience and own growth.

Mary has reunited with different members of her family who visit the program regularly. Especially on our Thursday lunches.

Nothing is as powerful as watching your neighbour transform and grow in front of you, to show you that so much is possible."

Mountain View is a vital stepping-stone toward independence; for others, it becomes their long-term home. Almost half of the residents have previously stayed at our Safe Space shelter, and the close connection between these programs means we can support people at every stage of their journey out of homelessness.

90 years young and still giving back 🎉🎂

Les served as Superintendent of Hobart City Mission from 1961 to 1991, dedicating more than three decades to supporting and strengthening our community. His leadership, compassion, and commitment helped shape the mission into what it is today.

What makes this even more remarkable is that Les is still giving back. This July marks 5 years of volunteering with us here at Mountain View, showing his ongoing commitment to helping others and supporting the community.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of presenting Les with a birthday cake and celebrating his extraordinary contribution. Our culture of innovation, being fiercely local, and putting the people we support at the centre of everything we do stands on the foundations built by dedicated people like Les.

Thank you, Les, for your decades of sacrifice, kindness, and unwavering commitment. Your legacy continues to inspire us every day.

Please join us in wishing Les a very happy 90th birthday! ❤️

Fuel prices are rising and for many people living far from Hobart, even a simple trip into town is becoming harder every day.

The Oatlands Community Hub is helping ease that pressure.

Their community bus trips into Hobart, utilising a Hub volunteer driver, take locals to major shopping precincts to provide affordable access to supermarkets and nearby essential services, removing the stress of long drives and high fuel costs.

The Hub is a community-led space, supported by Hobart City Mission and Communities for Children, offering real, practical support when it is needed most.

For food security, locals can access the Free Pantry on High Street, managed by Hub volunteers in collaboration with the Oatlands Community Association. Here, people can help themselves to pantry staples and fresh seasonal vegetables grown in the community garden by local volunteers.

This is becoming a sustainable project thanks to Laurel, a dedicated volunteer who runs the Mill Veggie Patch. Laurel fundraises year-round to ensure fresh produce remains available at the Pantry, including during the non-growing winter months. The Patch now has its own volunteer committee and fundraising bank account, helping secure the future of the project for the community.

“The Community Hub is an amazing asset for Oatlands. On a personal level it was a point of contact with others when I moved here knowing no one. On a community level the Hub does a great job, just one example is coordinating the provision of food in the Free Pantry for those having a battle putting a meal on the table.”

- Laurel

For those doing it tough, Emergency Relief appointments are also available, providing vouchers to help cover essential living costs.

At its heart, the Oatlands Community Hub is a welcoming place for support, connection, and everyday help close to home.

This winter, you can help keep support like this available for communities across Southern Tasmania.

When *John lost his eyesight, he nearly lost everything: his job, his home and almost his children too.

His children watched their dad leave home and move into a cramped hostel room in New Town. Suddenly, the safety and stability they knew disappeared.

Now totally blind, John faced every day trying to navigate stairs, a shared kitchen and the fear of not being able to provide the life his children deserved.

"The hardest part was having my kids with me in a one bedroom unit. Well, it wasn't even a unit, it was just a room."

Then John found DIY Dads, the only program of its kind in Australia helping fathers facing homelessness stay connected with their children.

Because of donor support, John and his children were able to rebuild their home and their future together.

“We didn't have any furniture at all, so they helped us out with getting restarted. Everything you can think of—from knives and forks to mattresses and beds. Everything made a difference.”

This winter, families across Southern Tasmania need your help to stay safe, warm and supported. Donate today to Hobart City Mission’s Winter Appeal and help provide practical support wherever it’s needed most.

*The trauma John and his children experienced is still very real, so to protect them, their names and images have been changed. We want to thank John for sharing his family’s story with us.
