We’re making great headway 💪 removing the invasive crack willow trees that have been strangling stretches of the Sandy Bay Rivulet for decades.

Getting down into the rivulet valley hasn’t been easy for the contractors carrying out this work, but the ingenious ‘English Reeves’ system is on their side.

Long-span ropes, a pulley and winch allow for the willows to be levered out with minimal ground disturbance, reducing sediment release, protecting bank stability and reducing impact on surrounding native plants and habitat 🐾🌿.

Fifty-six weedy crack willows have been removed from the Sandy Bay Rivulet already, with more to follow.

This work is part of a $1.1 million project to remove crack willows from our rivulets.

It is being equally funded by the City of Hobart and the Australian Government through the Disaster Ready Fund. It is administered by the Tasmanian Government Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Do you know someone who has lived experience of homelessness, who would like the chance to grow in confidence and perform their music in public?

Songs of the Street is an event that shines a light on the musical talents of people with lived experience of homelessness or housing stress.

If you are a performer, musician, songwriter or poet, we would love to hear from you. You can meet other performers, join in our workshops and perform live to win fabulous prizes, including studio recording time. Participation is completely free and the opportunities to grow your confidence and make connections are endless.

The main public performance will be held on the 6 August, in the Elizabeth Mall, and we are currently encouraging people to reach out and apply. Expressions of interest are open now. For more information visit www.hobartcity.com.au/Songs-from-the-Street

Public safety on Kunanyi / Mount Wellington 🚨❄️🚑

Keeping people safe is the priority behind a stronger parking enforcement approach on Kunanyi / Mount Wellington, with fines now to be issued to drivers who park illegally during peak periods⛄

When cars are parked on yellow lines, in no-standing zones, or in unsafe locations, they can block narrow roads, putting lives at risk by delaying emergency services. This is not a hypothetical concern.

🚑 Ambulance Tasmania has responded to 19 call-outs on the mountain in the past 12 months, and Tasmania Police Search and Rescue have also had their access impacted by illegal parking.

It is vital police and emergency services have clear access to mountain roads and tracks and we're supporting Tasmania Police and Ambulance Tasmania to help gain that access.

On busy days, especially after snowfall, conditions can change quickly and emergencies can happen without warning. Clear road access is critical to ensure help can get through when it’s needed most.

✅ Check conditions before you go
✅ Park only in designated areas
✅ Follow signage and directions
✅ Leave roads clear for emergency services

Kunanyi is a place to enjoy but it must be done safely.

🚧🚧🚧 We’re upgrading part of the popular pathway that follows the historic Battery Point foreshore.

We’re widening the pathway that passes AJ White Park and replacing the cobble pavers with a porous surface that lets rainwater pass through it and which will be safer to walk and ride on.

The pathway is increasingly popular with pedestrians and cyclists travelling to and from Hobart, and visitors drawn to the historic Battery Point precinct.

But the narrow pathway is not wide enough to comfortably accommodate shared use by pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Works are scheduled to start on Thursday 11 June 2026, and expected to take four weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Work will take place 7 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday.

This section of the pathway will be closed during the project, but the foreshore pathway will remain open as an alternative route for cyclists and pedestrians.

For your safety please follow onsite signage and directions.

WHY THIS PROJECT MATTERS

This project is supported by a grant from the Tasmanian Government’s Better Active Transport in Greater Hobart Grant Program.

It will make this popular pathway safer and more enjoyable for pedestrians and cyclists, help improve the amenity of this important precinct and encourage more people to walk and ride as healthy modes of transport.

A summary from the Planning Committee Meeting held on Wednesday 10 June.

Housing Reform Front and Centre
Hobart has taken a major step to help ease housing pressure, endorsing a planning scheme amendment to restrict new whole-home short stay accommodation in residential zones.

The proposal protects housing supply while still supporting tourism:
🔹 Home sharing remains allowed
🔹 Existing operators unaffected
🔹 Visitor accommodation continues in commercial and mixed use areas.

With vacancy rates below 1% and up to 840 homes used for short stays, the move is backed by clear evidence and strong community benefit.

The amendment will now go out for public feedback before independent assessment.

Other decisions:
🔹53 Warwick Street, Hobart: Alterations and Extension approved
🔹136 Wentworth Street and 112 Cascade Road, South Hobart: Approved 15-unit communal housing development

Since the last meeting, 19 development applications delegated to council officers were also approved while 34 development applications are currently being advertised.
