🐶 Okay, let’s chat dog parks!

A long, long time ago I really wanted to progress a dog park project. Back then, they were incredibly affordable to establish (and for the record, I still think they can be!) and while there was a lot of community support, there were certainly some concerns and considerations raised as well.

Over the past year, I’ve been approached a number of times about dog park projects across the Peninsula, and personally, I’m supportive of exploring them.

Generally, I see these as community led and community funded projects, with Council support, rather than something Council necessarily has to deliver or fund entirely. Grant funding could also be an excellent resource to help get a project off the ground.

Let’s have a constructive conversation and see what we need to consider to make projects like this possible and work well for our communities 🐾

You know what I love most about Yorkes? A community that knows their region like the back of their hand, and has the knowledge of its history to back it up 🙌🏼

With a bit of chat about ‘The Drain’ lately, the team were able to dig up some photos of the work we did down there a while back, so I thought I’d give you a little insight into how it looks.

The photos were taken from inside the farmer’s paddock, looking towards North Coast Road and the sea.

I know you’ll all be shocked to hear that I purchased the seahorse🐴😂

I also couldn’t go past the attitude shining through the face of the yellow-headed hula fish… absolute 😎

‘A solitary short-headed seahorse swims through the night, emerging briefly from the darkness before disappearing once more into the hidden world beneath the Edithburgh Jetty.’

Thank you to photographer Paul Macdonald and artist Elizabeth Solich for capturing the incredible wonder and hidden beauty of life beneath the water at our premier dive spot on Yorkes 🙏🏼🌊

🇦🇺 Australia Day 2027 – Hosted by Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol SA Inc. - Port Victoria Division 🇦🇺

👏🏼Huge congratulations to Port Victoria Coastal Patrol, and thank you for your application to host our 2027 Australia Day event.

🇦🇺This will be our first event under the new structure, allowing associations to host Council’s Australia Day celebrations, with significant grant funding on the table for the host.

🛥️ Planning with our team has begun, and I’m absolutely stoked to be celebrating Australia Day with such an important and valued organisation in our region.

🙌🏼A big thank you also to every association who has applied, or who has already told us they’ll be putting their hand up for 2028!

🇦🇺As a community, these events bring us together, celebrate the people and places that make us who we are, and help us share everything that makes Yorkes the best place to live, work and visit.

Firstly, I’d like to thank Cr Carruthers for his contribution as Deputy Mayor and for the support he has provided to me during my term.

Following the vacancy in the position of Deputy Mayor, the appointment will be brought before Council as a debate item at the 9 September 2026 Council Meeting.

I am taking this opportunity to clarify, strengthen and formalise the process going forward, ensuring the appointment is conducted in accordance with the Local Government Act 1999 and the Local Government (Procedures at Meetings) Regulations 2013.

My intention is simple:

☑️ Explain the process to Elected Members ahead of the meeting (emailed prior to this post).
☑️ Provide transparency to the community about the appointment process.
☑️ Provide independent guidance to Elected Members throughout the process.
☑️ Ensure the legislative framework is properly considered and followed.
☑️ Where the Act and Regulations are silent, provide appropriate procedural structure and guidance.

🌳TREENET Symposium 2026🌳
~Treenet Director Tim Johnson & Councillor Kristin Murdock~

One of the best ways we can strengthen our Council is by recognising and building on the expertise, experience and interests of our elected members and staff as a team.

We each bring different strengths to the table, and I believe we are stronger when we invest in those strengths and create opportunities to build our collective knowledge.

Cr Murdock is currently representing Council at the 2026 TREENET Symposium in Adelaide, while elected members and staff are also attending the LGA Roads and Works Conference in Tanunda.

Its about building capability, sharing knowledge and bringing new ideas back to Council for the benefit of our community.

When we build on our team’s strengths, we build a stronger Council.

Okay community, anyone want to help out YPCT with which road this actually is?

Just a wattle? Or a symbol of something far greater?

Well over a decade ago, we started from scratch with a small parcel of land, a dream and a lot of hard work.

Cameron and I are firmly in the hobby farm category. Our first tractor, which we still use today, was a 24hp Kubota. You have to start somewhere, and that old girl built just about everything. It was slow but she got the job done.

My family were farmers at Nunjikompita (anyone know where that is?) and Cameron’s family farmed in the Riverland.

Neither family is in the game anymore, and we know how hard it is.

The early mornings. The long days. The machinery that always needs fixing. The weather you can’t control. The stress of caring for livestock. The holidays you sacrifice. The new toys you don’t buy because fencing is expensive! While maintaining day jobs to keep the dream alive.

Behind every farm is a family, a lifetime of hard work and often, a dream that started with nothing more than a patch of land and a belief that you could make something grow.

It’s not for everyone, and not everyone will understand why we do it. Here on Yorkes, we’re among friends who understand, who get it, and who are building their own dream too 🌱
