Don Pashley spent five years of his retirement researching the origins of police camps, posts and stations in WA 1929-1945. A station was required at the Lakes between York and Guildford. Prisoners moved from York required an overnight stop over. The inn keeper allowed the escorting police but not the prisoners to stay there. So the police slept outside with the prisoners. The ruins are still there along with information boards. (BP Roadhouse).

Over the past three years the WAPHS has embarked on a number of major projects to enhance the Highgate facility, once the two WAPF sea containers were moved to Maylands. The last of those projects was completed today. Approximately six years ago a WAPF truck turned up with numerous decommissioned cell doors. They came from a number of old stations. The prize being two old timber cell doors still in their very heavy steel frames. The doors had a variety of interesting comments scratched into the surface. Likely from a Wheatbelt station. We embarked on a restoration process that involved the very skilful trades people at RCH Rockingham. We are very satisfied with the end result which now finalises many years of planning and hard work. To view the doors and other projects we are open most Tuesdays and Fridays 9am to 3pm.

Weekday Dayshift making sure the shoppers and staff at Boans safely negotiated the pedestrian crossing. Needed to be careful if an errant driver was distracted by an attractive window dresser and counter staff took their notice. Whistles not issued anymore, I guess you just shout.

I’ve been trying to put together an edition of the Peelers Gazette for distribution to all WA Police Historical Society (Inc) financial members. Will be a bumper edition once completed. In the meantime some snippets of information. A recent email from the WAPF depicted the new logo (badge) featuring the King’s (Tudor) Crown. The old timber cell door restoration project is almost complete. Will post pics once finished, big thanks to RCH Contractors Rockingham. Numerous historical items from Highgate are now with the WAPF Museum team for rejuvenation and digitisation. This has left a number of vacant display areas which we are filling with other interesting items. Our winter theme in the meeting room features items acquired from the Palestine Police (1924-1948) Old Comrades Association (WA Branch) very interesting. For more details we have two books on the force in our reference library. A relative (great, great, great niece)of Constable Walter GEE is visiting Sheep Island Cambden Sound West Kimberley in August. She had organised the original memorial plague in the 1980’s. We will organise a new additional plate that she will fasten to the Baobab commemorating Walter GEE and Jimba the Aboriginal Police Assistant buried nearby.

A few more police recruit schools visit the Highgate Facility treated to a presentation and tour by the committee volunteers. All seem to enjoy the visit and are appreciative of learning a bit about the officers that came before them. Hundreds of Transitional Officers have also visited over the previous 18 months during their three month transition training. We encourage all those officers to bring their families along for a visit and a more in depth examination of the artefacts, stories and photographs.

Today my son Lucas and I visited the Western Australian Police Historical Society Museum in Highgate. We only recently discovered its existence and it was a very interesting look back in time at history. Lucas locked me in a cell, we climbed on a SWAT vehicle, browsed through a bunch of old books, and spent quite a while inspecting all the things and imagining what it might have been like back then. Aboriginal officers deaths in the line of duty was quite eye opening, some incredibly large and terrifying looking weapons that had been seized (machetes) were on display and we enjoyed reading about the infamous 1993 Tank Rampage around Perth. The uniforms, especially for women have definitely evolved somewhat. Free entry. Open only on Tuesdays and Fridays. Highly recommend a gander.
