🚙 Planning to 4WD K’gari / Fraser Island? Save these tips! 🏝️
Driving on K’gari is an adventure in itself, but sand driving is very different from driving on the bitumen. Here are a few things to know before you go:
🛞 Drop your tyre pressure before hitting the sand and carry a reliable tyre gauge and air compressor so you can reinflate when needed.
🌊 Know the tides - much of the Eastern Beach is best travelled around low tide, with the scenic drive generally accessible two hours either side of low tide. Always check current conditions before you set off.
🔧 Pack recovery gear - a shovel, traction aids, tow rope, sn**ch strap, tyre gauge and air compressor are all worth having.
📡 Have reliable communication - mobile reception can be limited, so consider carrying a UHF radio, satellite phone or PLB, particularly if heading into remote areas.
🐢 Slow down for wildlife and people - Queensland road rules apply on K’gari, and the maximum speed on the eastern beach is 80km/h, with 30km/h on inland tracks. Conditions may mean you need to travel much slower.
🌙 Avoid driving at night - hazards are much harder to see, and getting help can take longer.
📋 Get your permits sorted - you’ll need a Vehicle Access Permit before driving on K’gari.
🚙 And remember: K’gari’s sandy tracks and beaches are suitable for high-clearance 4WDs with low-range capability. AWD vehicles are not recommended.
