⚠️ AusAlert Test in Geelong ⚠️
Belmont & Highton — 2:00 pm, Thursday 18 June 2026

The Australian Government is testing AusAlert, a new national system that sends emergency warnings directly to compatible mobile devices during disasters.

At around 2:00 pm, you may hear a loud, siren‑like sound and feel your device vibrate for about 10 seconds. This is only a test — no action is needed.

If receiving a Priority Alert could affect your safety or wellbeing, visit ausalert.gov.au to learn how to turn Priority Alerts off on your device.

AusAlert officially launches in October 2026 to help keep communities safe.

Today is International Fire Fighters day, where we remember firefighters who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In December 1998, five CFA (Country Fire Authority) firefighters lost their lives fighting a bushfire in Linton, 150km west of Melbourne.

This tragic event rocked the firefighting community. To recognise the sacrifice of those firefighters, and the work of firefighters around the world, International Firefighters' Day was established in 1999.

The date, 4 May, was chosen to coincide with St Florian's Day - the patron saint of firefighters.

Day and night - in the heat, cold or rain - firefighters answer the call to assist our communities every day of the year.

Today, we're thinking about what they give up to protect lives and property.

Thank you CFA (Country Fire Authority), Forest Fire Management Victoria and Fire Rescue Victoria for everything you do to help keep Victorians safe ❤️💙

The refinery fire in Corio last week is a reminder that emergencies can happen at any time, day or night. When the fire was reported, an incident icon immediately appeared on VicEmergency. Once firefighters arrived and assessed the situation, a warning was issued.

As the situation developed, the warning was upgraded to a Watch and Act, telling people to stay indoors. Regular updates were provided as information became available, and people were later told when it was safe to resume normal activity.

All these updates could be found on the VicEmergency app. To get them, you need to keep notifications on. Check that your watch zone settings are up to date with the things you want to know about.
