With strong winds and relatively low humidity forecast, fire danger will be elevated across our region tomorrow.

Greater Sydney - EXTREME Fire Danger with a Total Fire Ban in place.

Illawarra/Shoalhaven - HIGH Fire Danger.

Under Extreme Fire Danger, fires can be difficult to control and may spread quickly. With a Total Fire Ban in place, there are restrictions on what activities can be undertaken outdoors.

Please avoid any activity that could start a fire, check conditions before heading outdoors and follow the advice of emergency services.

Alongside tomorrow's hazard reduction in Menai, we will have a Bush Fire Information Point at Menai Marketplace (in front of Big W) from 10:30am to 2:00pm.

Come down and speak with our crews if you have questions about the planned hazard reduction burn, bush fire preparedness, or how to stay safe this bush fire season.

🔥 HAZARD REDUCTION BURN - LLANBERIS DRIVE, MENAI 🔥

The NSW Rural Fire Service will be conducting a planned hazard reduction burn in Menai on Friday, 4 September 2026, weather and conditions permitting.

The burn will cover approximately 10 hectares and is being undertaken to reduce bush fire fuels and help protect nearby homes and the community.

Motorists are reminded to drive to the conditions if smoke affects visibility, and nearby residents should keep windows and doors closed if affected by smoke.

Our Team recently took part in a large-scale emergency management exercise, bringing together the NSW RFS Illawarra Sutherland Team, Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) from Illawarra and Sutherland, and partner agencies to test our response to a fast-moving bush fire scenario.

Exercises like these are essential for strengthening interagency coordination, refining emergency plans, and ensuring we're ready to respond when real incidents occur.

The Wollongong Coal burn has been postponed due to rain, however the Mount Brown site received very little rain and this burn is going ahead. A reminder that smoke may be visible in southern Wollongong and Shellharbour.

Hazard Reduction Burns – Sunday 2 August

The RFS will be conducting two hazard reduction burns in the Wollongong area on Sunday, 2 August, weather conditions permitting.

📍 Wollongong Coal – Russell Vale
• Approx. 2.5 hectares
• Smoke may be visible along the Illawarra escarpment.

📍 Mount Brown
• Approx. 2.3 hectares
• Smoke may be visible across southern Wollongong and Shellharbour suburbs.

These burns form part of our ongoing program to reduce bush fire risk and help protect local communities.
