Amy and Emma have shared with us the ❤️ love they felt on their big day - and their thanks to everyone who campaigned for .

"We have been together for 12 years and married for 3 years. Our wedding day was wonderful! (After the wedding day was over Emma immediately said let’s do that again! 😊)

We would like to thank all those who fought for our right to marry, we are forever in your debt. Our family and friends have always accepted us but being able to legally marry in front of them has meant a lot to us, we felt even more accepted, recognised, and acknowledged just like everyone else."

Keep sharing your great stories in the comments below - we are loving reading through them all!

Our supporters were there for us throughout the long campaign for marriage equality in Australia. Millions of people stepped up during the postal survey to VoteYES and speak to their friends, families and colleagues about why marriage equality matters ❤

We were thrilled to see Matt and Angela, who supported Marriage Equality back in 2016 (picture on the left), recently enjoying their wedding day following the delays of the pandemic.

Corey and his husband, Pat, got married on the 9th of January 2018 – the first day they could legally get married in Australia 👨‍❤️‍💋‍👨

Corey shares their story with us:

"We got registered when that was the only legally permissible outcome, back when the Registered Relationships Act came in, and then we had a commitment ceremony right before the YES vote when we turned 30 because we gave up waiting to get hitched. We then had a mad scramble to get a wedding hastily organised in order to be ready for January 8. And after waiting 10 long years, we finally did it!

It’s fascinating when you look over the 15 years of history. We are probably one of the few couples out there who have a certificate of registration and a marriage certificate hanging on our wall at home.

Nobody blinks anymore when I call Pat my husband. My hope for the future generations is that they don't need worry about being judged when they introduce their husbands, wives or non-binary spouses.

Five years ago today, Marriage Equality passed through Parliament 🎉🎉

In this moment, our nation became a fairer and more equal place. On this special anniversary day, we share a beautiful story from Kaylene and her wife, Jodie.

They were proud to learn that they were the first LGBTQIA+ couple from Kaylene's community, the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community, to get married on Country 🏳️‍🌈🖤❤️💛

Kaylene shares memories from their journey so far: "My wife Jodie and I met online and fell in love from the first day we met! We began dating officially and I met my future son Bayley. Two years passed and I proposed to Jodie on her birthday. We we’re married in March 2021 in Booderee National Park located on my Country – Yuin Country – in Jervis Bay."

Meghan and Kim shared their memories of the YES vote, through to getting married and raising their family. Their wedding photo is full of joy! 💖

As Meghan recalls: "I will never forget the loudest cheers in the office when the results were announced - so loud that I couldn't hear my wife screaming and crying on the other end of the phone. It was at that moment that all of our dreams came true.

We were going to get married and have our family legally recognised and protected by law. Our son deserved that, as he was the best thing to ever happen to our lives.

5 years on, we now have a daughter as well. Our son is in Year 1, learning and making friends with children who will grow up knowing that a child with parents of the same s*x is quite normal, and not much different from any other family makeup regardless of gender, or member count.

We watch the results video every year at the anniversary, and we cry happy tears always. It's a good reminder of how lucky and blessed we are to be living and raising our family in a country that voted resoundingly YES to our acceptance, YES to equality, and YES to love.

We will always be thankful to all the LGBTIQA+ people who came before us and fought for everything we have today. And for all the LGBTIQA+ people of the future, may they never take anything for granted. This was a fight that was bled for by many before them. This was a fight where lives were lost by people whose only desires was to be loved and accepted. Enjoy it, spread it, and protect it."

As the five year anniversary of becoming law approaches we are celebrating LOVE! ❤️

So many happy couples have experienced the joy and significance of equal marriage laws since they passed through parliament on 7 December 2017.

We will be sharing some marriage equality reflections and some wonderful memories from LGBTIQA+ couples, their families and friends, and our supporters five years on.

First up is Shana, a Brazilian-Australian woman, and her wife Tania, a nurse. They met in Queensland and recently celebrated their one year wedding anniversary. They are enjoying the adventures of raising their son and are expecting a new addition to their rainbow family soon 😍

For them, marriage equality was about love and equality which they hope will be provided to couples across the world no matter where they come from.
