SES Hastings Unit VICSES Hastings Unit - Volunteer Rescue When needed we occasionally send teams interstate to assist with major disasters.

Hastings SES members are a group of enthusiastic volunteers providing services to members of the southern regions of the Mornington Peninsula 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. Our role includes Storm and Flood response and we are the combating agency for Flood, Storm, Tsunami and Earthquake in the area. We also provide support to other agencies such as Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, CFA and other

SES units across the state. Our members are dedicated to the role they play in the community and train regularly to maintain their skills and knowledge. We are funded by grants from council and state government, however the majority of our funds come from donations from individuals and organisations. If you are interested in learning more about who we are and what we do, are interested in being a volunteer (we provide the training and you don't have to be active to play a part in our team, there are roles for those who wish to support and not respond), or donate to us please contact us as we would love to hear from you!

Congratulations to Rochester Deputy Controller Judith Gledhill, and our neighbour Sorrento Unit Controller Mark Daw on being awarded the Emergency Services Medal (ESM) at this year’s kings birthday honours.

The ESM recognises the years of diligent service these members have provided to the SES and their communities.

Congratulations to both on this incredible achievement!

Thank you Mornington!

Thank you to everyone who generously donated to Hastings SES yesterday at Benton’s Square in Mornington, all the funds raised will provide ongoing support to the unit so that we can continue to provide a highly skilled, 24/7 emergency service to our community.

And an extra special thank you goes out to Benton’s Square Shopping Centre for allowing us to use your space yesterday to raise these vital funds.

Lastly, a massive thank you to our volunteers for spending their Saturday out and about chatting to the community and raising awareness for the work we do.

It’s been wet and windy on the peninsula, which kept your local SES volunteers busy with a number of jobs.

Last night Hastings volunteers were paged to attend a property in Mt Martha where the wind had caused the peak of a roof to come loose and blow around. Our crews attended and used a section of rope and some sandbags to weigh down the section of roof to allow the home owners to get some sleep before more permanent repairs could be done by their insurer in the morning.

Our team was back on the road early this morning to support our friends at Frankston ses for a Tree Down Restricting access in Mt Eliza, in the strong winds a massive tree came down blocking 3 families in their units. Our crews worked with multiple chainsaws for over 2 hours to clear a path to allow the residents move freely in and out of their properties. As we finished up there we headed back into Mornington to make light work of a tree branch that was hanging off a tree at the entrance to a dog park causing a safety risk.

This Saturday the 6th of June, between 9am - 4pm Hastings SES members will be at Benton’s Square Shopping Centre raising vital funds to support our volunteer emergency service.

As noted in one of our recent posts, Hastings SES covers 723 square kilometres of our beautiful Mornington peninsula, which includes Mornington and Mount Martha. We have a vehicle based in Mornington to assist with swift response times.

Today saw our crews support the residents of Mornington, after a tree came down partially blocking Bentons Road. We managed to clear the road quickly allowing full access for Mornington Residents.

We’re asking for you to give generously so that we can continue to provide these services. We really hope to see you this Saturday!

Not a typical week for Hastings SES…

While this week our pagers only activated a few times, we certainly didn’t expect to be called for a bridge collapse!

On Wednesday afternoon our crews were called out after reports came in that the suspension bridge that crosses Merricks Creek had collapsed, on arrival our crews were indeed met with a very broken bridge. Fortunately no one was injured during the collapse so our team secured the scene to prevent access or injuries occurring and notified the relevant authorities to manage the cleanup.

While this sort of incident definitely wasn’t on our bingo cards for 2026 it really does prove that Hastings SES is ready for anything.

We may be called the Hastings SES but that doesn’t mean we are only here for Hastings!

Did you know? Hastings SES covers the majority of the Mornington Peninsula, providing a 24/7 emergency service to the community from Baxter in the North, Mornington and Mt Martha in the West, Shoreham and Pt Leo in the South and of course, Hastings in the East, on top of this we are also trained and prepared to respond and cover the residents of French Island should the need arise, with the help of our friends at Westernport Coast Guard.

Within our response area we cover a full 723 square kilometres of land, 193kms of beautiful coastline, more than 80,000 dwellings and a population of approximately 155,000 which is growing by the day, all of this is covered by a small team of 50 Volunteers who give up their time to respond to an increasing average of more than 500 callouts per year.

Here at Hastings SES, one of our top priorities is helping restore a sense of normality to our community after an emergency, so if your home was damaged during a storm, what happens now?

Our volunteers regularly train in the art of temporary emergency repairs, using a vast array of tools, sand bagging equipment, tarps and waterproofing materials we aim to make the building safe, to prevent further damage and give occupants time to seek professional repairs.

This week (18th-24th of May) is national Volunteer week! Celebrating all those who give up their time for the community, so we’re asking you, will you make 2026 your year to volunteer?

More than just trees on roads??

While the SES is very well known for our storm related response, especially tree down and flooding calls, did you know that SES units are also trained to assist in many other rescue situations, such as supporting Ambulance Victoria?

Recently, on one of our Monday night training sessions Hastings SES headed to the Hastings Skate Park to practise using our low angle rope systems to assist in moving a patient through difficult terrain.

This is one of many skillsets that Hastings SES could be called on to provide at anytime, and we’re prepared 💪

Today is a very special day for all of us here at Hastings SES, and SES units around Australia. Falling right in the middle of national volunteer week is Wear Orange Wednesday, Aka WOW Day!

Today is a day to celebrate all things SES and give thanks to our volunteers in Orange who show up 24/7 when the community calls ready to tackle any emergency.

To show your support, why not throw a splash of orange into your daily life, it could be a small touch to colour to your outfit, some crazy orange socks, or even break out an orange drink bottle for the day!

Did you know? Durng major storm events we may open Hastings Local Headquarters (LHQ) as an Incident Control Point (ICP).

The Hastings ICP is managed by a group of highly skilled volunteers, some of whom also volunteer on the trucks while others prefer the strategic management side of incidents.

During storm events Hastings SES can have anywhere from 10 to a few hundred active requests for assistance and it’s up to our ICP team to manage and coordinate resources to make sure that all jobs get completed in a timely manner, we simply couldn’t do what we do without these amazing people!
