What a weekend ahead for the Harvey Brunswick Leschenault Football Club. 🦁

To have our Ladies, Colts and Reserves heading into South West Football League Grand Finals is a fantastic achievement and one the whole Shire should be proud of. 🏉

The SWFL brings together clubs from across our cities and shires — Bunbury, Busselton, Augusta-Margaret River, Donnybrook, Collie, Dardanup and Harvey.

And when HBL runs onto the field, it isn’t just representing a football club. It’s representing the Shire of Harvey as does the Harvey Bulls. 🐂

This is exactly why the discussion about our Shire becoming a City is about more than a change of name or a title.

We are already competing, growing and building relationships on the same regional stage as established cities across the South West. Our people, our businesses, our sporting clubs and our young people are increasingly part of a regional city network.

We should be proud of where we’ve come from — but we should also be confident enough to recognise where we are heading.

There will always be some who would rather tell us why the Shire isn’t ready for the next step.

It’s better to look at what our whole Shire is actually achieving and not look at just postcodes.

HBL is a great example. Our Shire is already punching above its weight providing facilities in all our towns.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the Ladies, Colts and Reserves and congrats to Trinity Brown for winning the Nola Marino medal for F & B in the whole competition.

Tonight we got to see just what can come from our own backyard at the Brunswick hall 90th celebration.

Johnny Jukebox — John Standley — from. Australind started out as a local South West performer and has now taken his talent all the way to the Australian Idol stage, finishing in the Top 6. (John Standley⁠)

That’s something worth celebrating.

It’s also a reminder that where you come from shouldn’t limit how far you can go.

Our Shire has the people, the talent, the businesses, the community and the ambition to think bigger too.

That’s one of the reasons I believe pursuing City status is important.

It’s not about changing who we are. It’s about recognising what we have become — and having the confidence to aim higher.

Last night, we celebrated one of our own.

Our Shire has talent and ambition. Now let’s give it the status to match.

A very significant visit to the Shire of Harvey this week, with the WA Planning Commission visiting us for the first time.

I don’t think the timing is insignificant.

As we actively pursue City status, it is important that Harvey is recognised as the growing, strategically important community that it is.

We are putting ourselves on the radar — and the city campaign is about making sure State Government recognises our potential, our growth and our future.

This is another step in putting the Shire of Harvey where it belongs: at the table when decisions about our future are being made.

It’s time to give local businesses and shoppers more choice.

At our recent Council meeting, I put forward a motion to investigate fully unrestricted trading hours across the Shire of Harvey.

I believe local businesses should have the freedom to decide when it makes commercial sense for them to open — not have Council dictate when they can and can’t trade, or what they can sell.

Unrestricted trading hours would give residents and visitors greater choice, provide businesses with more opportunities to grow, and help us compete with neighbouring areas where trading restrictions are less of an issue.

Importantly, this isn’t about forcing any business to open longer. It’s about giving businesses the choice.

Our communities are growing, and our regulations need to keep pace with the way people live, work and shop today.

I believe Council should be looking at ways to reduce red tape, support local business and encourage economic growth — and unrestricted trading hours are part of that conversation.

I look forward to seeing the investigation progress and having a proper discussion with our community about the opportunities this could create for the Shire.

More choice. Less red tape. A stronger local economy.

Our Shire is fortunate to be home to some of Western Australia’s largest and most successful businesses. They provide jobs, investment and economic opportunity, and our community benefits from having them here.

As our region continues to grow, so too does the demand on local infrastructure—our roads, sporting facilities, parks, community spaces and services.

It’s time to start a respectful conversation about how major industry can partner even more closely with local government and our community to help deliver the infrastructure that supports both residents and business.

Many large companies, like Alcoa, already work with the Shire, and recognise that earning and maintaining a social licence to operate means more than simply meeting regulatory obligations.

It means investing in the communities where their employees live, where their families play, and where their businesses operate.

If industry, local government and the community work together, we can create a stronger, more resilient Shire that can relieve cost pressures which benefits everyone.

Having been through the Local Government "Behavioral Complaints Process" recently, I make these personal observations, that I think are ludicrous and need addressing.

1. Usually, a complaint gets put against a Councillor because a member of the public, or group, are offended by a view put forward in a meeting by the Councillor on any given topic.

2. Anyone from the public can put in a frivolous complaint, with no fee attached, that might give the complaint some credibility.

3. An independent consultant is then employed to analyse the complaint, and make a recommendation back to the committee, costing in my case near $2,000, which is not recoupable in any way to the Shire.

4. The consultant is no lawyer but makes findings on the integrity of defendant Councillors.

5. Councillors are presumed guilty till they need to prove their innocence or actions taking up valuable time if you have other employment.

6. When the Behavioral Complaints committee sits it looks at the advice from the consultant and they presumably rubber stamp the recommendations of the consultant.

7. In my case one of the members of the committee is a very good friend of the complainant and another was well known to the complainant also.

8. This pitches Councillors from the same Council making a determination on another Councillor. How does this promote harmony amongst Councillors?? In my case I certainly have no time for one who tried for harsher punishment.

9. There is no right of appeal.

10. In the end my remarks were so offensive that you can still view them on the live streaming of the Council meeting.

Is it any wonder people question Local Government....

Roger Cook’s $692m housing fix for regional cities from Broome to Bunbury

Roger Cook will unveil his vision for seven regional cities to propel the State’s economy and will use $170 million from WA’s mining giants to foot almost a third of the bill for more housing.
Next week’s Budget will include $692 million for regional housing, including an extra $419 million over four years for the biggest ever build of government worker accommodation, that has stalled in the past decade and fallen behind population growth.
The Premier will use a keynote speech on Tuesday to declare Broome, Port Hedland, Karratha, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Bunbury and Albany the key hubs to drive growth.
Roger Cook will unveil his vision for seven regional cities to propel the State’s economy and will use $170 million from WA’s mining giants to foot almost a third of the bill for more housing.
Next week’s Budget will include $692 million for regional housing, including an extra $419 million over four years for the biggest ever build of government worker accommodation, that has stalled in the past decade and fallen behind population growth.
The West Australian understands that mining giants Rio Tinto, BHP and Gina Rinehart’s Hancock will chip in a further $170 million, to help the Government build more than 500 additional homes for teachers, police and nurses by 2030.

“Seven cities is a vision that is about ensuring the seven regional cities outside of Perth have the economic infrastructure they need to support the industries of the future,” Mr Cook will say.

CITY STATUS - ITS TIME
A few days ago Minister Don Punch dropped $89 million into The City of Bunbury for some boat pens.

Well done to CoB but this comes before the State budget is even announced.

If Minister Punch, who lives in our Shire, dropped $89 million into the City of Harvey (for namesake), that represents 3 years of rate collections, and here’s what we could do:

✅ Seal 90 kilometres of unsealed roads
✅ Build the now shelved Harvey & Australind Civic centres.
✅ Do a major upgrade of the LLC & construct ovals 7 & 8
✅ Refurbish all our halls, clubs & buildings throughout the Shire.
✅ Fix the Harvey pool

Just to name a few.

With The Shires population soon to overtake Bunbury we need to become WA’s next regional city to attract this type of funding.

This Anzac Day we remember the sacrifices of our men and women 🇦🇺

They fought:
For freedom of speech, not fear of speaking.

For unity, not division.

So no one stood above another because of race, class, or creed.

Under one flag, for one nation.

For a country where you could think, speak, and live freely.

Lest we forget.

Please support the services this Saturday at localities throughout the Shire.
