A brick-fronted addition facing Ommaney Road, known as the Memorial Hall, was added in 1926 to honour those who served in the First World War. In 1936, the original timber hall was replaced by a larger brick building, officially opened by Governor Sir James Mitchell. Its grand opening ball drew 300 guests.

🚨Let's talk about smoke alarms 🚨
Most homes have smoke alarms installed, but they’re easy to forget. Without regular checks, cleaning and replacement, they may not work when needed.

‼️Why smoke alarms matter
Smoke alarms warn you early if there’s a fire, often before you can see or smell smoke, especially at night. Even if you already have smoke alarms installed, they need regular testing, cleaning and replacement. If they are not looked after, your smoke alarms may not work when you need them most.

⚠️Common issues
A lot of smoke alarm problems come down to simple things:
▪️Smoke alarms older than 10 years
▪️Flat or missing batteries
▪️Smoke alarms that haven’t been tested recently
▪️Dust or insects affecting how the alarm works
▪️Smoke alarms removed or disconnected (often after false alarms)
▪️Smoke alarms painted over during renovations
▪️Not being sure how to check or maintain them.

🛠️Safety tips to reduce risk
A few quick checks can make a big difference:
▪️Press the test button to make sure your alarm is working
▪️Give it a quick clean to remove dust or insects
▪️Check the battery (including any backup battery)
▪️Make sure alarms are in the right places, especially near bedrooms
▪️Replace any alarm that isn’t working properly or is more than 10 years old.

✅Take action this month
▪️Test your smoke alarm by pressing the button until your smoke alarm makes a sound
▪️Clean your smoke alarm using the soft brush on your vacuum cleaner
▪️Check the replacement date on your smoke alarm
▪️Replace smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old
▪️Check what type of battery your smoke alarm uses, including backup batteries in mains powered smoke alarms
▪️Replace 9-volt alkaline batteries every year.

A working smoke alarm can give you the time you need to get out safely. Take a few minutes this month to make sure yours is ready.
