Today, on National Sorry Day, we pause to acknowledge the strength, resilience and continuing cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to recognise the pain and ongoing impact of the Stolen Generations.

It is a day to reflect on our shared history, listen to the voices and experiences of First Nations peoples, and recognise the importance of truth, healing and connection.

LINC acknowledges the pain and strength connected to the Stolen Generations and recognise the importance of listening, learning and continuing to build respectful relationships within our community.

Deep in the Megalong Valley (partly Lithgow LGA) lies the story of Old Billy Lynch, the last leader of the Middle Cox’s River band, of the Gundungurra People. From his early life in the Southern Highlands to his leadership in the Megalong and Kanimbla Valleys, Billy’s story is one of resilience, adaptation, and connection to the land. From bush tracker to respected elder, his life spanned a time of immense change, bridging Aboriginal traditions and European settlement.

A WELCOME CHANGE to our Council chambers

You may have noticed a new artwork behind Mayor Cass Coleman during the most recent meeting of Council.

This piece, titled Our Future on Canvas, was created by fifteen Year 11 students from Lithgow High, Portland Central School and La Salle Academy in a workshop delivered by local Wiradjuri artist Brett Groves and designed by the Lithgow Emerging Economy Plan team to support cross school collaboration, honour local culture and First Nations storytelling, and provide young people with a meaningful voice in shaping the region’s future.

The painting is a visual map of the students hopes and solutions for a brighter regional future. Each idea was represented symbolically through the ancient storytelling traditions of Wiradjuri culture, transforming student voice into colour, pattern and meaning.

Mayor Cass Coleman welcomed students from Lithgow High School and Brett Groves to the Council Chambers today to recognise their efforts.

The Mayor heard from the artists about the meaning of the artwork and discussed their vision for the future of the Lithgow LGA.

The artwork is just one way the Council is helping to build a shared vision of our communities’ future.

Currently, Lithgow City Council is consulting with the community on the development of its Community Strategic Plan (CSP) If you would like to share your vision for the future of the LGA visit www.letstalksevenvalleys.com.au
