🍒 Growing Forward: TVO’s next Chapter

The next few years are shaping up to be pretty transformational for TVO, and we’ll be taking you along every step of the way. Now that we are out of harvest, we’ve had time to refocus on efforts on what’s next. Here’s a glimpse at a few very exciting things that are on the horizon for Torrens Valley Orchards...

Increasing Yield and Orchard Innovation 🌱
Orchardists first, we are constantly looking for ways to integrate new technology and systems into our orchard. With strong plantings already established, we are now focusing on fine-tuning our growing practices to increase our annual yield. Smarter farming, more fruit, same consistent premium fruit.

Packing Shed Expansion 🔨
If you’ve visited our shed door in the past few years, you’d know our pack house facility is by no means small, equipped with the state’s largest optical sorting production line. Bigger and better, our shed expansion will enable us to handle a higher yield for years to come and will include additional high-value packing equipment.

New Shed Door Sales Facility Build 🍦🍒
Perhaps the most exciting thing to share with you: in 2027, we’ll start construction of a new shed door sales facility. Complete with a cafe and seating, for when you come to visit us during cherry season. Maybe even some cherry ice cream. Still in its planning stage, we are all ears and would love your input. What would you like to see on the menu when you come to see us?

Summer Pruning ✂️ 🍃

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of our structural pruning is done during summer post-harvest. Focusing on balancing our trees during pruning helps ensure healthy trees that perform year after year.

☀️ Goals of Summer Pruning

* Removing excess growth to allow the tree to focus energy where we want it to.
* Making big cuts to maintain airflow and an open vase-like centre shape.
* Managing and improving light pe*******on through to lower branches.

🍃 Commercial Pruning vs Back Yard Trees

Pruning a commercial property is a little different from your backyard tree. Whilst Summer is also a great time for you to prune your cherry tree, you’d want to take a much lighter approach. Keeping your tree generally open and manageable is the go. It’s very easy to get carried away; over-pruning in summer can stress a tree.

✨ 🍒 What Our Customers had to Say

TVO Cherries 2025/2026

With cherry season only having just finished, we are finally now getting to fully absorb all of the nice things you guys had to say about our cherries this year. At each step, every decision we make during cherry season comes down to the same goal: delivering premium cherries, every time.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to let us know how much you enjoyed your cherries this year. Your lovely words make it all worth it ❤️ 🫶

🍒☀️Heat! Hot Weather and the Orchard...

Between our Adelaide Hills and Riverland properties, there's been no escaping the heat this January. Long hot days and hot nights to match. We thought it’d be the perfect time to let you in on a little about the role heat plays in our orchard. As orchardists, we do as much as we can to negate risk factors all year long. The weather is one of those things we can’t control. Here’s the Breakdown:

🔥 Late Summer

Whilst cherry trees can tolerate a fair amount of heat, extended periods of heat can cause tree stress and, in extreme cases, leaf scorch. With adequate watering and by planting more heat-tolerant varieties, we can help mitigate this.

🍂 Autumn and Winter ❄️

During the colder months, cherry trees reset. Each variety has its own “cold hour” time requirements. In a warmer winter, insufficient cold hours can lead to poor flowering and lower fruit set. Low-chill varieties like our Cupid and Nebula cherries are better suited to warmer weather. Requiring fewer cold hours than other varieties.

🌸 Spring

The time of bloom and growth! Too much warm weather can shorten flowering windows, stress trees, and disrupt pollination.

☀️ Early Summer:

Heat is key to moving the season along during this time. Not enough heat and cherries won’t mature or develop sugars. However, faster is not better; too much sun can cause tree stress, halt growth, and even cause sunburn on fruit.

One big balancing act! Carefully watching for what our orchard needs throughout each season is a key factor in consistently producing a premium product each harvest.

Cherry Creations 🥧🍒

This year, in between the madness over New Year's, we took the time to get creative with our cherries in the kitchen. Cherries come and go so fast that it can be hard to find the time cook something up before the season is over. But when you do! Yummo. With such a versatile flavour profile, the possibilities are almost endless when it comes to cherries.

✨ Did you whip up your own TVO cherry creation this season? We’d love to see what you made in the comments below.

🍒 Cherry season is over; let the work begin

With the cherry harvest just having finished, you’d think it’d be time for a rest, maybe a holiday. Well, no life at TVO is far from quiet right now.

Cherries are a risky crop with a very short harvest window. As operators of the orchard, the rest of the year is spent mitigating as much risk as possible with stringent orchard practices. All to set us up for the best possible season ahead. Each season of work helping us to deliver those premium cherries you love each harvest.

🌱✨Throughout the year, we’ll be working on soil health, technology upgrades, new plantings/ grafting, pruning, irrigation, orchard nutrition, and more. Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more and more of the behind the sences action. Giving you an insight into what actually goes on when it’s not harvest here at TVO.

🫶 So stick around if you like to see how “the sausage is made”, or rather, “the cherry is grown”.
We’ve got plenty of off-season content coming your way ❤️
