SA Council Elections 2022
Trevor Ryan
Candidate for Light Ward - Light Regional Council
I moved from Melbourne to Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley over ten years ago to live in my wife Angela’s family home after the passing of her father Reinhold Koehler. The Koehlers emigrated to Australia in the 1950’s and were all employed by the Seppeltsfield family in their winery across the road and have developed a strong sense of history and identity with the area. In the relatively short time, I have been a part of the community, I have also developed a sense of identity with the unique landscape, heritage, and the strong community of the Western Barossa and beyond.
Currently retired, I am a carer for my adult daughter who lives with a disability and my elderly mother. I am passionate about social justice and the rights of diverse groups including the disability community and older generations. The recent pandemic and ongoing concerns held by many has triggered significant self-isolation and stress to those who are vulnerable. This is a time for Council to make an extra effort to be more cognisant of their role in supporting this part of the community.
My work history includes professional building and construction, and IT Management with not-for-profit organisations including St Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army. I now spend any spare time working on long term renovations and building a small house for my daughter to be more independent and comfortable. Occasionally I enjoy dropping in a line somewhere around the coast.
The role of Council in the community is often misunderstood. Decisions made by Council effect our everyday lives. We have the opportunity for input into these decisions, but the current community consultation process often produces no public submissions. This is an opportunity lost.
If elected, I intend to foster greater community engagement in local government by providing opportunities for open and transparent communication and input into decision making processes. I will also pursue greater visibility and openness in all council plans and activities. I believe exploring options for a “country cabinet” approach where Council meetings are held in different locations throughout the Council area will provide the opportunity for increased community involvement and engagement.
I look forward to representing the Western Barossa community and the entire Light Ward in the Council chamber.
