It's all here inside the big green building on Blackwood Road. Open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am-2pm each week and by special arrangement for tour groups. We provide a comfortable and relaxing venue for tour groups to stop and allow travellers to stretch their legs. The Discovery Centre is located at 38 Blackwood Road in Greenbushes, opposite the Heritage Park. Volunteers from the local community, who have an enormous amount of history to share, operate the Centre.

Mining Monday
Where would mining be without mine houses?

These ones are decidely more impressive than the ones the 1800's miners lived in. With each generation the houses get easier to live in.

Do you have any old Greenbushes house photos to share with us? We'd love to do stories on them at some time.

Through last week, 2 of our volunteers had the enormous fun of hosting a class of Year 2 children from East Manjimup Primary School - An Independent Public School

Ada the Friendly Ghost of Greenbushes popped in and the little ones had lots of questions for her as well. Quiz sheets were handed out and the adults learned as much as the children.

A great day for all. Let us know if you would like your school or community group to come for a guided tour as we are always happy to have you.

Let us introduce you to Dame Ada May Norris DBE, CMG. And answer the question, what has she got to do with Greenbushes?

Ada was born here on 28th July 1901 to Alice Baggs and no father's name appeared. Ada was known as Ada Bickford as Alice married Herbert Bickford in 1905 after third daughter Doris was born, Cora was older than Ada, and Phyllis was born in 1910.

The family moved to Victoria when Ada was only little. She studied at University of Melbourne getting her Batchelor of Arts and her Diploma of Education in 1924, followed by her Masters in 1926. In 1929 she married John Gerald Norris. John became a Supreme Court Judge in Victoria.

Ada was an amazing leader. She received her Order of the British Empire in 1954, then served on the National Council of Women, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women 1961-1963. She was the first woman to receive the Companion of St Michael and St George in 1969. In 1975 she chaired the International Year of Women Committee and received the United Nations Peace Prize. A year later she was promoted to Dame Commander of the British Empire. The University of Melbourne presented her Honorary Doctorate in 1980.

Dame Ada died on 10th July 1989 in Melbourne but never failed to mention her birthplace of Greenbushes in Western Australia.
