🔥HAZARD REDUCTION BURN – MENAI

Grays Point along with other Illawarra / Sutherland brigades are conducting a 10 hectre hazzard reduction burn in the Menai area.

Crews from across the Shire and Illawarra are taking part, including Grays Point, Engadine, Illawong, Menai, Kurnell, Heathcote and Sandy Point are supporting the operation.

The burn is designed to reduce bush fire fuels and help protect nearby homes and our local community.

🌫️ Please be aware: There will be additional smoke in the area this afternoon and overnight, particularly as the weather cools and smoke settles.

While smoke is expected, if you see any uncontrolled flames or a fire that appears to be escaping the burn area, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Thank you for your understanding and patience while crews work to reduce bush fire risk in our community. 🚒

Where will you and your family go to stay safe? Your family may not be together when you decide to leave,
so it’s important to organise a meeting place. Not all evacuation centres cater for pets, so if you have pets, consider places that allow them to stay too.

🚒🔥 Help Us Find Your Hydrant!

Hidden or covered hydrants can cost valuable time when we need them most.

As we are about to head into another bushfire season, we’re asking residents to take a look around their property and make sure their nearest fire hydrant is:

✅ Clearly visible
✅ Easy for firefighters to access
✅ Free from grass, soil, mulch, plants and other obstructions
✅ Not covered or buried

The photos below show just how easily hydrants can become hidden under grass and soil. In an emergency, every second counts, and being able to quickly locate and connect to a hydrant can make a real difference.

🔵 Look for the blue cat eyes on the road — these help indicate the location of hydrant points. You may also see a yellow “H” marking nearby to help identify the hydrant location.

If you have a hydrant near your property, please take a few minutes to check that it can be easily found and accessed.

See a covered or hidden hydrant? Let us know so it can be brought to the attention of the appropriate authority.

Please share this post with your neighbours — you never know whose hydrant might be hidden.
