FREEMANS NOB - JUST STUNNING
www.urbangaragecollection.com/desktop-wallpaper

This shot from Freemans Nob. Freemans Nob was used as a lookout post for shore-base bay whaling stations in Encounter Bay in the late 1830s. The port was established to provide a safe seaport for the Murray river trade which terminated at Goolwa as the Murray Mouth was deemed too treacherous and unpredictable for safe navigation.

Horseshoe Bay was proclaimed a port in 1851, and the settlement above the bay was named Port Elliot in 1852 after Charles Elliot, the Governor of Bermuda who was a friend of the then Governor of South Australia, Sir Henry Young. The location had been previously known as Freeman's K**b; the aboriginal name for the area was "Witengangool"

Goods and passengers were carried between Goolwa and Port Elliot on the first public railway in Australia completed in 1854.

PULLENS ISLAND PORT ELLIOT
www.urbangaragecollection.com/desktop-wallpaper

Pullen Island is a 1 Hectare Granite Island lying 0.5 km offshore from the town of Port Elliot on the southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia. It was originally named Lipson Island but was renamed in 1839 by W.J.S. Pullen, the Colonial Marine Surveyor, after himself.

The Island is about 300m long and is largely a mass of weathered granite boulders, with a cove and beach on the northern side providing a landing for small boats. Birds breeding on the island include little penguins and silver gulls.
