A few members of Karnup VFES spent the weekend at the WAFES Conference and Awards Dinner, joining volunteers from across WA for a great few days of learning, networking and catching up with other brigades.

There were plenty of interesting sessions and activities, including discussions around the challenges of lithium-ion battery incidents, managing a multi-generational volunteer brigade, air operations and the use of firefighting helicopters, as well as a tour and demonstration of vertical rescue operations.

The conference also provided some valuable insights and lessons from incidents during the previous high-threat season, giving us plenty to bring back and share with the rest of the brigade.

The Awards Dinner was also a great opportunity to recognise the hard work and commitment of volunteers across the state. Congratulations to everyone who was recognised for their contribution. 👏

Thanks to DFES for putting on a great weekend and to everyone involved in making it happen.

Tonight we had the privilege of awarding one of our “wisest” members the National Medal, recognising an incredible 15 years of operational emergency service to the community. 🏅

A fantastic achievement and a well-deserved recognition of the time, commitment and dedication he has given to serving others over the years.

Congratulations Jeff, and thank you for your continued service 👏

Tonight’s training focused on fire extinguishers and fire blankets, combining theory with practical hands-on training.

Our members refreshed their knowledge on the different types of extinguishers, which fires they are suitable for, and how to safely use them. We then put that knowledge into practice with practical exercises, building confidence and reinforcing the importance of choosing the right equipment for the situation.

Regular training like this ensures our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively when called upon to protect our community. 🔥

Training while getting the job done 🔥

Members were out this evening assisting with multiple pile burns on a local property, providing a great opportunity to safely reduce fuel loads while building skills within the brigade.

The burns also doubled as a valuable training exercise, with our newest recruits gaining hands-on experience and other members further developing their knowledge and confidence in planning, lighting, monitoring and managing pile burns under supervision

Last night, we held a volunteer week event - a great evening that gave members and their partners the chance to connect in a relaxed, informal setting while celebrating the efforts and achievements of the past year.
