TO BE SAFE, CHILDREN MUST BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED IN CARS, BUT RECENT RESEARCH SHOWS ALMOST FOUR OUT OF FIVE CHILD SEATS ARE BEING INCORRECTLY FITTED.

In a crash at just 50km/h, an unrestrained child will be thrown forward with a force 30 to 60 times their own body weight. Not only will they be seriously injured or killed, they may even kill others inside the vehicle and there is the likelihood that they will be ejected through one of the windows.

If you’re a parent or even occasionally carry young children in your car, we hope we now have your full attention.

The safest way for children to travel in a car is in a child seat suitable for their weight and size. In 2009, child restraint laws were introduced across Australia, but Monash University’s Accident Research Centre has ascertained that these laws are highly ineffectual.

Child restraint systems have been shown to reduce the risk of death in children aged between two and six by 28% compared with seat belts, but their effectiveness is critically dependent on the correct installation. And this is where the problem arises: the Monash study found that the new laws had not significantly reduced the proportion of children who were incorrectly or inappropriately restrained.

To be safe, children must be properly restrained in cars, but recent research shows almost four out of five child seats are being incorrectly fitted.
