Our very own Darren (Daz) Robertson received the Citizen of the Year award at the Shire of Gnowangerup's Danjoo Day last month. Daz is an outstanding and inspirational role model within our community, consistently going above and beyond in his service to others.

Daz very quickly joined up to volunteer with Gnowangerup's St John Ambulance service and the Bushfire Brigade. Since joining St John as an Emergency Medical Technician in 2023, Daz has served over 250hrs, of which 140hrs were in 2025 alone. Daz is regularly out and about offering emergency services during the night when everyone is asleep. He never says no and is very reliable to work with on difficult jobs.

We are very proud of you Daz and very lucky to have you on our team!

We quite often get asked how do we do it?
We do it for our community, a much needed service provided for those in need. Can you help, sure you can. Nothing is as rewarding as helping people in times of need. Contact your local sub-centre and become a valued St John Volunteer.

It looked like a great turnout for Santa's early visit to Gnowangerup on Monday.

Don't forget to tidy up trip hazards around the house and leave out some healthy snacks for Santa tonight. Accounts from last year, Santa just barely squeezed down the chimney— regretting all the cookies from past years! Meanwhile, the elves bungled the drop-off: one tripped over his own curly shoes and face-planted into the tinsel, another accidentally swapped the naughty/nice list, and a third got tangled in the Christmas lights, turning the tree into a glowing elf burrito.

Merry Christmas and stay safe folks!

Dear Road Warriors,
As you dash through the backroads to Grandma’s house this Christmas, we have one tiny, itsy-bitsy request: please arrive in one piece.

We love a good holiday reunion, but we’d rather not be the surprise guest who shows up with flashing lights and a stretcher. The turkey is much tastier when you’re sitting at the table instead of lying on our trolley.

So, slow down, buckle up, don’t drink and jingle your keys, and remember: reindeer have the right of way—especially the one with the red nose.

Drive like your nan is in the passenger seat… because one day she might be.

Stay safe, stay merry, and we’ll see you on the other side of the holidays—preferably not professionally!

With festive cheer (and a sigh of relief),
Your Local St John Gnowangerup Vollies 🚑🎄

This Christmas, we send our wishes to you and your loved ones—near and far. For those celebrating with family close by, may your home be filled with laughter and joy. And a nod to absent family and friends; our thoughts are with you during this tender time.

Thank you for the trust you place in us year-round. Our dedicated crews remain ready to care for our community whenever you need us.

Stay safe, cherish the moments, and hold your dear ones—present or in your heart—a little closer.

With heartfelt gratitude and seasonal wishes,
Your Local St John Gnowangerup Vollies 🎄🚑

A fitting poem by Wagin's St John Manager, Jessica Forsythe.

In quiet hours when the world’s asleep,
You rise to answer calls that run deep.
From roadside dust to quiet hills,
You serve with heart when duty calls.

At 2am, beneath a rural sky,
No cameras rolling, no watchful eye.
Just you, the road, the open land,
A steady will, a helping hand.

You stand through storms, through grief and pain,
On solo runs, in sun or rain.
With values firm, you do not sway.
You Lead with Heart, come what may.

Support or frontline, field or phone,
No one here ever stands alone.
Your pride in place, your rural might,
Shines like stars in Wheatbelt night.

With fewer tools but fuller hearts,
You show us where true courage starts.
It’s not just service year by year.
It’s every choice to still be near.

You Walk the Talk, you Think Team too,
You Make it Better in all you do.
And every time you give your part,
You show us where compassion starts.

Not with loud words, but quiet grace,
To serve humanity, face to face.
To calm the storm, to ease the pain,
To bring back hope again and again.

Teams aren’t just who stand in line,
They’re every voice that dares to shine.
We each may walk a different way,
But still we serve, and still we stay.

So, here’s to you, each soul out there,
Who lifts with strength and serves with care.
Your legacy in this proud land
Is written not in stone, but in every hand.

You’ve held, each life you’ve soothed and saved,
In every pathway you have paved.

Wheatbelt South, your spirit’s flame
Will always burn in heart and name.

As Christmas settles on our Wheatbelt land,
With dusty roads and stars so grand,
We thank you for the year you’ve seen through,
For every call, and all you do.

You Lead with Heart, you Think Team strong,
You Walk the Talk the whole year long,
And with each act, in every weather,
You always strive to Make It Better.

May peace and rest find each of you near,
A Wheatbelt South Christmas blessing
for our volunteer community’s heroes this year.
