🧠 I AM 5 | The Brain Development Behind What You See

At five years old, a child’s brain is becoming more organised, more curious and more independent—but it is still very much under construction.

They may seem capable one moment and overwhelmed the next. They ask endless questions, want to understand how things work, and are beginning to think ahead, solve problems and make sense of the world around them. Yet they still need support with managing big feelings, waiting, flexibility and self-control.

What looks like “not listening,” frustration or forgetfulness is often a reflection of a brain that is still developing the skills needed for emotional regulation, planning and impulse control.

When we understand what is happening inside a child’s developing brain, it becomes easier to respond with patience, connection and realistic expectations.

This is Age 5 in our Brain Development Series, following the journey from ages 3–25.

🧠 I AM 4

At four years old, my brain is growing at an incredible pace.

Every day I am making new connections through play, movement, curiosity and the people who care for me. I ask endless questions, have a huge imagination and experience big emotions because the parts of my brain responsible for planning, self-control and managing feelings are still developing.

Sometimes what looks like “challenging behaviour” is simply my brain learning how to cope with a big world.

When we understand the development behind what we see, we become more patient, more connected and better able to support children as they grow.

This is the latest resource in The Brain Development Series (Ages 3 - 25 years) – helping adults look beyond behaviour and understand the child underneath.
