My message of condolence for Tex Newberry at last Tuesday’s General Council Meeting:
I'd like to move a message of condolence for Adrian John (Tex) Newberry. We have a photo of Tex in the gallery with his wife Roslyn. Tex attended many, many Council Meetings, in fact, he attended more Council Meetings than the overwhelming majority of people in this room, including at the table. He was the third child born to Stanley and Alice Newberry on 21 October 1934 in Proserpine. He had two brothers and three sisters. He was schooled in Proserpine and Charters Towers and one of his favourite subjects was physics. However, Tex also believed it was important to learn the history of Australia.
His first job was as a clerk for the railway in Mackay while he waited for a fitter and turner apprenticeship later in Townsville. His next job then was as a fitter and turner, and he was paid five pounds and sixpence a week. Then in 1964, working for a Swedish company, many would know Atlas Copco, Tex moved to Gladstone to service the machinery during the Queensland Alumina Limited construction boom. Tex married Roslyn in Gladstone on 13 of January 1968. They have two children, Mark and Leith and two grandchildren Sofia and Celeste.
A man full of positive thoughts. Anyone who knows Tex knows that he believes it's the only way of thinking. To be positive not to be negative. He featured in Our Priceless Past as one of our fantastic Gladstone seniors and one of our most amazing local humans.
I'm sure Councillors and many of the Gladstone Regional Council officers would be very sad today and we hold a chair especially for Tex today. As mentioned, he's attended more Council Meetings than many and for most of us, we recognised him as the 10th Councillor.
As mentioned, he featured in Our Priceless Past, which was written by Tannum Sands students Hayden Shewan and Jeff Buckle and I encourage everyone to read, not just Tex's story, but all those featured in Our Priceless Past.
Sincere condolences to Tex family. Tex passed away on Thursday 28 May 2026. His son, Mark is currently writing his eulogy, and I don't have a date for his funeral service, but I'm sure it will be attended by many.
Tex provided free advice to all who would listen and to those who showed potential. Rest in peace Tex Newberry.
